John Goodwillie, clerk to Bonnie Prince Charlie's secretary, John Murray of Broughton

I wonder if anybody has any connection to, or knowledge of, John Goodwillie who was active during the Jacobite Rebellion in 1745, when Prince Charles Edward Stuart's Jacobite army invaded England from Scotland? Goodwillie had been a 'writer' [meaning lawyer] in Edinburgh before the hostilities broke out.
In particular, there is a press reference [in the 'Berwick News & General Advertiser' of 30 Dec 1902, to John Goodwillie keeping a journal during those historic time, and it would be fantastic to know where this journal is now.
In the 'Scots Magazine' of September 1792 mention is made of a marriage between John Maitland, general surveyor of excise, and a 'Miss Magdelene Goodwillie, daughter of the deceased John Goodwillie, writer in Edinburgh', which I take to be a reference to the same John Goodwillie, but he seems to have been active as a 'writer' until at least 1777.
I have not been able to refer to 'The Goodwillie, 1590-1986', by John Ross Goodwillie, which is not in the British Library, National Library of Scotland, nor in the Society of Genealogy library in London.
Any biographical info on this man, or his journal, would be very welcome.

Thanks
Richard Knight

My Grandfather worked for Goodwillie-Green Box Company

My Grandfather, Frank Siwicki, worked for the Goodwillie-Green Box Company in Manistique, Michigan. He moved to Rockford, Illinois, when the company moved there. I am curious if there are any artifacts from the company that might mention employees and/or their families? I am also curious to confirm that he worked as a camp cook in Michigan.

I am trying to build a time line as to when he moved from Chicago to Michigan. I notice in the narrative that the company opened up a plant in Manistique in 1907 so I'm assuming that it was some time after that when my grandfather moved up there. My mother, Josephine Siwicki was born in Manistique as were all the other siblings.

Wonderful to come across this narrative!

Mary Ellen Johansson Evans

Hello. Is your grandmother, Magdalena Stephen Middleton, the daughter of Isabella and John Middleton? Isabella is the sister of my great grandmother, Ann Gall Herd, who married George Anderson in Old Deer and immigrated and settled in New Zealand where they raised 9 children. Looks like you are interested in the Goodwillies, but if you have any info on the Herds or would like to know about Ann, I would be happy to share. I now live in Ottawa, Canada, so it is interesting to see that at least one of Ann's siblings ended up here. Thanks. Norma McCartney

Re: David L. & Rose Herrick Goodwillie

David and Rose Goodwillie
David and Rose Goodwillie were the next family to occupy the house at 228 Forest Avenue. They first appear in the Oak Park Directory in 1902; their last entry as residents there was in 1918, though they likely lived there until 1921. David Lincoln Goodwillie was born on July 21, 1863 in Chicago to David and Cecilia Goodwillie, both of whom came to Chicago in the 1840s from their native Scotland. He was the third of six children, including four boys and two girls.2 He worked at Goodwillie Brothers Box Company at 35 E. Ohio Street in Chicago, a leader in the lumber and box manufacturing business and the oldest manufacturer of boxes in the United States at the time. The family firm had a factory in Wausau, Wisconsin beginning in 1890 and Manistique, Michigan beginning in 1907.3 David eventually became president of the company, then known as the Goodwillie-Green Box Company of LaSalle Street. David was also involved with the forestry committee of the Union League Club and of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.4 His older brother James Gunn Goodwillie, who also was a prominent member of the company, lived several blocks away at 309 N. Kenilworth Avenue.5
Rosetta Herrick Goodwillie (known as Rose) was born on August 15, 1863 in Oak Park to Orrigen and Dora (Kettlestrings) Herrick. Roses’s grandparents Joseph and Betty Kettlestrings were considered to be the founding family of Oak Park. David Goodwillie and Rose Herrick were married on March 23, 1886 in Oak Park.6
David and Rose Goodwillie had five children: David Herrick (1887), Edward Easson (1888), Mary Cecilia (1891), Dora Ellen (1894), and Herrick Ross (1898), all of which who lived in the house as children or teenagers. The two youngest children remained in the Oak Park area throughout their lives, while the older three lived in Ohio, Pennsylvania and Vermont. The Goodwillies were responsible for constructing the large two-story addition on the south side of the house in 1902, likely due to the large size of their family. The design of the addition is attributed to architect Eben E. Roberts, and was constructed by local builders Harper & Butendorff.7 David and Rose divorced in 1921, after which David returned to Chicago. He was remarried in 1923 to a famous widowed musician, Mrs. Pamela Newby Gale, but he died a year later on December 16, 1924. He is buried at Rosehill Cemetery in Chicago. Rose lived at 138 S. Scoville upon her death on November 2, 1932 following a long illness. She is buried in Forest Home cemetery in Forest Park.8

Death from Hydrophobia

A horrible death from hydrophobia occurred yesterday. The victim was a young man, twenty-five years old, named William Goodwillie, foreman in a box factory on North Pier. Nine weeks ago a friend brought into the shop a little dog picked up in the street. Goodwillie in fondling it was bit in the thumb. Little notice was taken of the wound and it apparently healed over. The first symptoms of hydrophobia appeared yesterday morning. When he arose to wash himself the sight of water threw him into paroxysms. Medical aid was summoned, but tbe malady increased during the day and night. He "foamed at the mouth, snapped at members of his family, and was seized with convulsions every few minutes. He realized at intervals his situation, and begged his friends to keep away for safety. This afternoon it was determined to try the effect of a sulpher vapor bath. The patient was handcuffed and kept in the bath half an hour at a temperature of 186 degrees. When taken out and laid on a lounge he first seemed better ; but in 15 minutes be died in horrible spasms. He leaves a wife and children.

Chicago Tribune, April 27, 1869

I don't know a darn thing, but I have some info which might help you put some pieces into the puzzle.

David Goodwillie was born in 1828 and moved to chicago from Canada in the late 1840's. He started out as a carpenter but got into the lumber business and moved to De Pere Wisconsin in the early 1850s, then back to Chicago. He owned several sawmills in downtown Chicago (two of them burned down and he started again); in the 1860's he had a plant at Louisville and - my mind is fuzzy!- another one further west, maybe St. Louis? During the Civil War, the company was making bread boxes for the Union Army. By the early 1900s David's sons had turned the company into the biggest makers of boxes in the Midwest, and they produced all sorts of building supplies (shingles, shooks, mouldings, you name it) as well.

The Goodwillie company had a plant at Manistique, Michigan, starting maybe in the 1890s?.... David's eldest son Robert was in charge of this facility, I believe. It seems that it was the starting off point for raw lumber which was then shipped to Chicago (and to the plants run by 2nd son James and 3rd son David) and processed into finished product. The Michigan factory was destroyed by a tidal wave ( sounds preposterous, doesn't it?) in the early 1900's.

I've checked my files and have not found mention of Mr. Jennings, but that doesn't meant that he was not connected with the Goodwillie family business in some way.

To add to the confusion, David Goodwillie also had a son, David Goodwillie, born 1863 and mentioned above. Since the Goodwillie's like to recycle family names there were other Davids as well... makes things a bit tricky to keep track of. I am thinking that your Mr. Jennings must've been connect to the older David since they seem to be around the same age.

I hope you'll be in touch if I can be of further assistance.

Hello there- I am a descendent of James Gunn Goodwillie, David Lincoln Goodwillie's older brother by 12 years. James was born in DePere, Wisconsin, and yes, the family had a business there,-- it was a lumbering town and the Goodwillies were lumbermen -- but then came back to Chicago soon after his birth.
And James' parents, David and Cecelia, had two other children, David and Cecelia,-- for a total of 9 children-- who died as children, in an epidemic, I believe. They are buriend in Rose Hill Cemetery ,Chicago with their parents.
David Lincoln Goodwillie and Rose Herrick actually had another daughter, Dora, who died unmarried in the 70's...she's buried in Forest Home Cemetery with several of her branch of the family. (For some reason I think t David and Rose may have had a fifth child, but I'll need to check my records.)
My great grandfather is buried in Forest Home, too, but in a different plot.
David Lincoln Goodwillie is buried in Rose Hill Cemetery with his parents; he divorced Rose sometime after the First World War, and remarried a lady named Permelia. I know nothing about Permelia at all, do you?
Be in touch!! We have lots to talk about. and I have lots of information I'd be willing to share.

The book is available from Brock University Library or is in the Welland Library and probably you can get it through inter-library loan. I think its also at the Ontario Archives. It is out of print. I have photocopied it occassionally but its expensive and probably its best for you to look at the copy available in Ontario and then let me know if you want to pay for the photocopying and postage which mounts to about CND$ 80.00.

We have the whole family tree. Father of George Wilson Bulien b 1823 d. 1851 burried in Fonthill Cembetary. He was first born of Joseph and Elizabeth (Hellems) Goodwillie. GWB's will probate show the full name but his sone indicated in 1910 his name was Willson Bunion as was his son's name b. 1850. His brother was Charles Harmon Goodwillie who lived to 101 years of age. My father, John Ross Goodwillie wrote a 270 page book with all the relatives dating back through the first Joseph Goodwillie to come to North Amberica, went to New Carlisle Quebec then Barnet Vermont. The family dates back to 1590 from Fife in Scotland.

I don't know if this is any help, but the names are simular so there may be a connection. Mary Goodwillie was born 10/2/1792, daughter of Rev David Goodwillie of Caledonia, Vermont. She was married 9/28/1810 to Rev. Alexander Bullions.D.D. pastor of the Associate Congregation of Cambridge (Lamoille County, Vermont). According to records I found online, they hadd two children- a daughter (not named)that married Rev. William Pringle and a son, Rev. David G. Bullions. (My great, great, great grandmother is Mildred Goodwillie, sister of Mary).

I can help you with some info on Robert Goodwillie, born in Scotland, and died in Canada. I am his great great great granddaughter.
He married Janet Gunn in Edinburgh and they came to Canada in the late 1820s. She died in a cholera epidemic in the early 1830s, and he married Jean Munro.
HIs son David went to Chicago from Canada in the late 1840s. Janet Munro Goodwillie relocated to Chicago in the 1850's, so Chicago had two branches of Goodwillie, one from Robert's first marriage, and one from his second. Funnily enough, there are hardly any Goodwillies left in the Winy City! In the late 19th century there were lots and lots.
Perhaps I can help with more information. All this stuff about bridge building and McGill is new to me; my branch of the Chicago Goodwillies were box makers.
Regards, Maggie

I have read a report re: chicago industry in which my ggggrandfather was supposedly to have worked with the lumber and building industry - Jennings and Goodwillie. He, George W. Jennings, was born in 1829 in NY and moved to chicago in 1835. He is in the 1860 census living in Chicago and in the 1870 census living in Michigan. Do you know anything about Your David Goodwillie and an association with George W. Jennings during any of this time period?

Hi Davina
I am also a descendant of the David Goodwillie/Ann Philp line. My ancestor was Charles Goodwillie (1834 - 1904) the 3rd son and 4th child of David and Ann. Charles Goodwillie married Jean Doig in 1837 in Cupar, Fife and had the following children: David (b. 1859), John Doig (b. 1861), Margaret Duncan (b. 1863), Charles (b. 1865), Ann (b. 1868), Jane (b. 1870) and Christina (b. 1875). John Doig Goodwillie (1861 - 1937)was my great grandfather. He married Jean Pearson in 1885 in St. Andrews, Fife but they must have moved to Forfarshire (Angus) right away as the three children they had were all born in Lour, Forfar. My grandfather Charles was born 1886 and at the age of 18, he immigrated to Canada, settling in the Neepawa, Manitoba area. He married my grandmother Magdalena Stephen Middleton, another Scottish immigrant from Aberdeenshire in 1913 and they farmed in this area until Charles' untimely death in 1925. My grandmother then moved the family to Winnipeg (the capital city of Manitoba) and raised her 3 children by dressmaking and running a boarding house. My father was born in 1922 and was only 3 when his father died of blood poisoning and so never knew his dad and of course, I never knew my grandfather either. By the time I became interested in family history, my grandmother was dead, too, so I have many unanswered questions. Unfortunately, our line of the Goodwillie family will soon die out. My one male cousin had 3 daughters and my one brother never married. Good to know there are still Goodwillie descendants still living in Fife. My husband and I visited Strathmiglo, Auchtermuchty, Falkland and Cupar while on vacation in 2007. Couldn't find any Goodwillies though. I have a fair bit of information on our Goodwillie line and would be willing to share if you are interested.

Best regards
Linda Goodwillie Otto
Manitoba, Canada

Heya Mister G.,
I have some information which might interest you, as well a copy of the Goodwillie family history which describes your line, the Eastern Branch.
If I remember correctly, there were four brothers who came to to Canada in the early 19th Century; I am a descendant of Robert Goodwillie, who lived in Montreal and is buried there. Robert's descendants went to Chicago, and he had one brother whose descendants also went to Chicago as well. Robert's other two brothers ended up with descendants in Canada, and New England (and Vermont in particular..)
I am a member of the Western Branch- David Goodwillie ( 1828-1908, son of Robert and box maker and lumberman based in Chicago) is my great great grandfather.I look forward to hearing from you and trading information.
Maggie Laurent Gordy
Hi Davina thank you for replying to my query.
I think the Charles Goodwillie I am researching may have been born between 1800 - 1812. It is very difficult finding any relevant information as so little information is known about him. However if, in your searches you come across this Charles -who may have worked in the ship building industry - or some other industry related to engineering then it may be that this is the lead I am looking for.Either that or if you find a Charles Goodwillie listed as seaman or whaler.
You can also reply to me by email -catken@xtra.co.nz.
Thank you very much for offering to investigate. Any expenses incurred by you would, of course, be reimbursed.
Carolyn Atkinson
Hi
I see from an old thread on Ancestry you are a Goodwillie from Fife.
My great, great, greatgrandfather Charles Goodwillie came from Fife. There is no information about him except what was noted by Bishop Selwyn who married Charles and his Maori wife Kura in the early 1840's. He is listed as engineer/whaler from Fife and had resided in New Zealand since 1838. It was a wild colonial time in New Zealand history and little information was recorded. No death information either. If he was an engineer I doubt it was on a sailing ship - I thought he might have been in the ship building industry prior to leaving Scotland. No other Goodwillie's that I have contacted seem to be related to my Charles Goodwillie. If you read this and are kind enough to answer any information that you can offer would be greatly appreciated.
