That's interesting that you mentioned Indiana. There's actually an 1807 census of the Indiana Territory (which also included all of southern Illinois) online, and there is a John Goodman listed on it, I believe in Dearborn County. Is that perhaps another ancestor?
I sent off my DNA sample this week, so I'm really interested to see what kind of results come up. Especially considering that my 3G-grandfather supposedly had Illinois roots (the census records of my 2G-grandfather listed Illinois as "father place of birth"). And if that's the case, then I strongly suspect that his ancestors came from KY or TN, or possibly even VA. Those areas seem to have had a good number of Goodmans at the time. So we may have a relation going back past that generation.
