I have been searching for any and all records on the Goodlet's, we have been unable to find out who the father of my great, great grandfather, John J. Goodlet. How do you connect?

Hi “GC-Gateway” from a Kentucky Goodlet!

I saw in the GOODLETT message board that you were looking for the book “Links in the Goodlett Chain.”
While the book is out of print, I accidentally stumbled across a scanned copy that the LDS FamilySearch.Org has available in their free-access library.

You can get to it by copying the entire link below & pasting it into your brower (or if you're hesitant to use a "strange link" then see alternate method at bottom of message).

https://dcms.lds.org/view/action/ieViewer.do?dps_pid=IE95408...

You can go directly to the FamilySearch.Org website, click on the blue "Books" (about an inch or so from the top)- then click on the green "Family History Books" - enter the title of the book in the search box - click on the first result & it will take you to the PDF of the book, which you can then read on-line, print, or save to your computer.

Karen Goodlet
Their son Wilson N Goodlett (1814 -) married Lenora Ann PRINCE (1818-). One of their daughters, ???
There is a book called Links in the Goodlett chain by Mildred Goodlett that has a great deal of information. It has photos of William and Nancy Goodlett, whose portraits are in the Museum in Greenville SC. William fought in several Rev battles as did his brothers. If you send your email I can share

I descend from James Goodlett, his brother. I have tried to find information on Mary Jones, his wife and would appreciate any information, but since it is a different line you probably can't help. You can get most of the Goodlett Pension applications on line

Thanks for your reply. It's been a long time since I posted the queary. Since then I've found a lot of information about Mary Frances Farr's parents etc. Her father was John Thompson Farr, born in 1803 in Mecklenburg Co, NC. He died in Ouachita Parish in 1876. Her mother was Mary Elizabeth Hyde, born in 1807 in South Carolina. She died in Ouachita Parish possibly around 1877 but I'm not sure about that date. This was my main interest. The only children I have for Mary Frances Farr & Theodore Goodlett were an infant that was born in 1854 and Robert Theodore Goodlett (1866-1930). Could you tell me the other children's names and where they lived in Texas? I have more informatiion about the Farr line if you would like it.

My 5th great grandfather James Goodlett is buried in Springwood Cemetery, Greenville, SC. His wife, Nancy, is buried next to him. James was the first US Marshall for the Greenville District. Their daughter, Eveline, is my 4th great grandmother on my maternal side.

Through some very diligent looking a findagrave.com volunteer and a Sons of American Revolution member located the grave site of James's father, William Goodlett and his wife, Nancy Middleton. It was an exciting discovery!

I would really like to share more info with relatives. Please feel free to contact me at my home email: pallyn1@gmail.com

Hope to hear from you soon!

Pam,

The Goodlett boys must have had a *thing* for those Powers girls. You are the second in the past few months to post from the Powers line. Now, I'm wondering if brothers didn't marry sisters. I'd also like to expand my tree in any areas that are lacking.

My lineage also goes back to Robert Goodlett, but through William's brother, David. Although I have a personal copy of "Links in the Goodlett Chain" (a thorough and reputable reference on the Goodletts thru about the 1960's), I happened upon this on-line volume/version from the BYU Library with which you might enjoy spending a few hours (or days?).

Copy and Paste the link below.

http://contentdm.lib.byu.edu/cdm4/document.php?CISOROOT=/FH2...

Good luck and Happy Hunting!

Please come back and post about your findings.

Christopher Columbus Goodlett was not the son of John J Goodlett Jr, he is the son of John J Goodlett SR. John J JR b. 22 March 1858, was only 2 years old when Christopher Columbus was born on 25 Aug 1860. If you can't prove Adam Goodlett is the grandfather of all these Goodletts and there are thousands of us, it's more than anyone else has been able to do, as far as I know or have been able to find there is no proof of it unless some records is found in the future. Every strain I have followed says Adam is not the grandfather of John J. Goodlett. I wish he were, we might all be doctors and lawyers instead of farmers. I have beat my brains trying to verify a connection there. I have read thousands of pages, spent hundreds of hours researching that, but I think we all think that as there were only a few Goodletts in the state so it is an elimination theory. There are times I think, as my grandmother use to say, they found me under a rock, her answer for where babies came from, when you were too young to know. It seems that is what happened with our branch of the Goodlett Tree, we sprang out of nowhere to Kentucky, from under a rock or grew in with the tobacco plants. There were no Goodletts, except for Adam's family, then all of a sudden there were several and about 4 over the age of 45, where did they come from. Adam wasn't the first Goodlett here, Elizabeth, John's wife paid taxes in 1713 in North Carolina, they relocated a couple of years later to Orange County, VA. Their first child was born 1720 - 1722. Robert arrived in 1739 and brought a bible with him, check pg 54 in the Links Book, he married Nancy Ann Middleton around 1750 and their first child was born about a year later. Adam did not get here until about 1757. I think if anything we maybe descended from Robert or even John. I have left Adam as the link until I can prove one way or the other. The only connection I can find to Adam is if James, and Ebenezer and Nancy are siblings of John J, would be the names are the same as Adams children and the fact that Ebenezer married in Clay County, Indiana. Anyway I have nothing to back up that John or Robert might be the start of the Goodlett's from Kentucky. I will continue to dig and if anyone has anything to help prove who John J Goodlett SR's father is please send it to me and maybe I can get some rest. Thank you all

Sorry I need to make some corrections, John J was born 14 Nov 1814 and died in 1899, if he had been born in 1770 he would have been 119 about when he died. Margaret Plough/Plew 18 Dec 1826, was his first wife, they had 9 children together, and they spent most of their lives together in Mercer and Anderson County. she died and he married Alice Norton, and they had 3 boys together, who moved to Platte, Missouri area as fairly young men. John J and Margaret are buried in Bethel Baptist Cemetery in Mercer County. Adam Goodlet according to all records I have seen father never came to the USA, Robert is believed to be a brother possibly. Adam did have a school and he students were reviewed by a furture president James Madison, but none of his students became President. His son was Adam Gibb, he had 3 sons that were Doctors, Adam Gibb, John, and Ebenezer. There are pictures of Adam Gibbs son Michael Campbell Goodlet and his wife Caroline Meriwether who started daughters of the Confederacy, in the book Links in the Goodlett Chain, which can be read on line in the Family Search Library and can be saved as a PDF file.

I have information On Dicie, her parents and husband's parents if anyone needs it

Marlene,
I don't have pictures of them, just his grandson who's pictures are in the Goodlett Book. I did find a bunch of letters his son, Dr Adam Gibb Goodlet wrote while he was an Army surgeon, they are written over a 4 or 5 year period. The letter where he resigned is there. The letters are related to his Army career. I don't think there is anything personal except for his opinion. My 4th great grandfather is William Goodlett that married Catherine Clarke and John J b 1814 is my 2nd great gf twice.

I typed in Goodlett and got several hits, but most of them were about him, his sisters and either who was visting them, or who they visiting. He must be in 30 newspapers, they give where they lived and also mentioned Ezra Goodlett several times. The papers are old late 1800's to about 1920, but as his social life wasn't what I was trying to find, and getting a bad headache trying to see the print. If he was my great grandfather, I would have read every word. They do mention his politics and running for office in a couple. Good hunting. If you have trouble let me know, but I tried the link abt a month ago

GOODLETTS OR GOODLETS IN CULLMAN COUNTY, ALABAMA

I am searching for information on Goodletts (or Goodlets) in Cullman County, Alabama from the Greenville, SC area.

In particular I am trying to find information on BEN GOODLETT and HATTIE J. (FOWLER) GOODLETT and their ancestors.

I have the following information from confusing records but these seem to be the same persons:

BEN aka: MOSES BENJAMIN or BENJAMIN MOSES GOODLETT [GOODLET] b: 1857 in Greenville SC area to MOSES C. {b.1820} AND PRISCILLA (or Possibly EMELY/EMILY) {No maiden name given in either case} GOODLETT/GOODLET and resided in the Cullman and/or Baileyton areas of Cullman County Alabama.

MARRIED TO HATTIE J. FOWLER whose parents may have been GARNER and SALLIE FOWLER.
Children include the following:
NANNIE [or NANIE] (GOODLETT) MARTIN {She is my Great Grandmother}[d.1936]married to JAMES JOHNSON MARTIN and resided in both Eva, Morgan County, AL and Baileyton, Cullman, Alabama.
CARRIE or CARIE or CARRAH / ANN [or ANNIE] GOODLETT who appears to have died in Texas in the 1950s.

NANNIE AND JAMES MARTIN had several children and included MY grandmother HATTIE AUDREY (MARTIN) PUTMAN/PARKER {1904-1987} as well as other daughters ANNIE and MALINDA OTHELLO, and sons BEN and SAM. (Obvious that some of these children are named after some of the Goodletts)

What I am trying to figure out is NANNIE'S FATHER NAMED BENJAMIN MOSES or MOSES BENJAMIN... and who his mother really is.
Hattie Fowler's parent's full names and in particular what is SALLIE FOWLER'S maiden name.

Any help in filling in these gaps would be appreciated.

If I recall correctly Sam Martin died very young. There was another daughter of Jim and Nannie that died as a child. As I recall my grandmother Hattie told me that she was about 5 when the child died.... but thats a lot of memory to recall. Granny aka Hattie died about 25 years ago.

I dont think we have any pics of Jim and Nannie that are still extant.

I have personal remembrances of her other sisters, Annie and Othello [Malinda], and her brothers Wilbur and Ben Martin. Uncle Ben died when I was very young, but I remember seeing him in his home in Tarrant City, AL. - a very sweet and gentle man, much like my grandmother.
Uncle Ben was also a WWII vet and was at Pearl Harbor on the day of the attack.
That is wonderful to hear of a new connection.
Moses and Hattie Jane (Fowler) Goodlett are also my great great grandparents. Their daughter Nannie Goodlett Martin was my grandmother's mother. My Grandmother, Hattie Audrey (Martin) Putman is my mom's mother and is the namesake of Hattie Jane.

I would love to have copies of this information that you speak of and see any pics you may have. You did not post an email address. But here is mine:

rjreid1964@msn.com

Regards,
Richard Reid

I'm a born Goodett. The story that I know is that we came from Goodlettsville, Tn somehow. But my great grandfather was born in Alabama, I think, but later the family migrated to Omaha,Ne last I knew. I don't have the missing links, mainly because blacks didn't get the priviedge of being recordedd as people having a real birthdate, it has been a challenge to find a trail.

Looking for Goodlett Particpants in AncestryDNA

Hello. This is my first post to a ancestry board. I am Daniel Goodlett, son of John, grandfather, Oda, great grandfather, John Henry and his father Jacob.

I have good reason to believe that Jacob was not a blood Goodlett and was maybe adopted by Nancy Goodlett of South Carolina. Another possible adoptee was John Jackson Russell Goodlett, the illegitmate son of Henry Brock of South Carolina.

I did the Ancestry DNA test a little over a month ago and have not found any Goodlett families, except for Elvira Goodlett come up after looking at over a thousand possible cousins. Elvira married Job Loftis, who had a son Soloman who had a daughter Susan that was also impregnated by Henry Brock (very business man by his own admission).

So my question is how many Goodletts have partcipated in the DNA test, or those who have known Goodlett relations that have taken the DNA test.

By the way, I have had several Russell and Brock surnames that have come up when looking at those potential cousins.

Would appreciate any help you can offer.
