Gooda later Goodey and Goody in London area 1800s

My ancestor John Gooda married Mary Ann Mellen/Mellon i 1826 at St Olaves in Southwark, then in Surrey and now in London.

The 1841 census shows while his wife was born in Surrey, he was not. He appears to have died died in 1846/47 before the 1851 census which would have shown his place of birth, so I do not know where he was born.

Later the name was changed in some branches to Goodey or Goody, but is found in the records under a variety of variants also from Gooday, Goodday etc. The 1841 census lists the family as Goode.

John Gooda was a farrier - a smith of horses shoes - and with his wife had the following children I know about:

1. Mary Gooda - born abt 1830 in Surrey. It is not known what happened to Mary but she may have died before 1851.

2. John Gooda/Goody - born abt 1831 in Bermondsey, Surrey (now London). Married firstly Harriett Ballard in 1850 and secondly Rebecca Knott in 1856. He was also a farrier and died in 1870 or 1871. His name at both marriages and also his children were registered as Gooda but his death was registered as Goody.

3. William Gooda - born abt 1833 in Surrey. It is not known what happened to him.

4. Harry/Henry Gooda/Goodey - born abt 1836 in Lambeth, Surrey. He married Mary Ann Dethridge in 1858. He was a bricklayers labourer and then a labourer in a pottery. He died in Lambeth in 1898. He was baptised and married as Gooda but his children born from 1859 onwards were all registered as Goodey.

5. George Gooda/Goodey - born 1839 in Lambeth, Surrey. He was my ancestor. He married Mary Hubbard in 1862. He was a potter/pottery burner and died in Camberwell in 1891. He married as Goody and his eldest son Alfred George was baptised as Gooddy in 1863 (no birth entry has yet been found). His son Walter born in 1870 was registered as Goodey but baptised as Gooda and his son Arthur born in 1875 had his birth registered as Gooda. George's death was registered as Goodey.

6. Frances Eleanor Gooda - born 1843 in Lambeth, Surrey. It is not known what happened to her.

The 1851 census shows widowed Mary Mellen/Gooda with two other children in adult Harriet and a child John. However this is in fact incorrect and they are evidently the wife and son of the John Gooda born abt 1831. They are in fact listed twice on that 1851 census, with the other record of them at their home address.

I would very much like to hear from anyone who may also be researching this branch.

Hi sorry I never saw your reply.

No I haven't found out for certain the origins of my John Gooda.

However it is known from his age at death that he was born in c1801-1802. I therefore think he may well be the John Gooda born to William Gooda and his wife Eleanor Lacy in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, and baptised there on 29 December 1801.

This does tie in with the names John gave his children and also from the apprenticeship records a William Gooda, blacksmith, took an apprentice in Yarmouth in 1804. As John was a farrier this would tie in with his father's profession.

William Gooda first married Mary Johnson in Yarmouth in 1799, then married Eleanor Lacy in Ludham in 1801. It is known from his signature on these two marriages that he was the same man.

There were two other William Goodas I have found in Yarmouth around this time. One was William Gooda, a whitesmith, who married Ann Fuller in 1798 and had children up to 1816.

The other William Gooda was a cordwainer who married as a widower in 1814 to Frances Nightingale. His probate document (which names his wife) shows he was a cordwainer and he died on 8 January 1824. He was buried in Yarmouth on 13 January 1824.

I am yet to firmly establish if my John is indeed the one born in Yarmouth in 1801 but it does seem likely. I need to look at apprenticeship records in Yarmouth to see if a John Gooda was bound to a farrier in c1815.

Are you connected to any of these Gooda branches?

Kind regards,
Jon

i am researching John Samuel Good who married Ann Collier in St James Piccadilly/Westminster England in 1828. But i would like to mention there is the family Gooda that came out to Australia, so possibly the people you are missing sailed to another shore.
Cheers
