Inspired by the Matlock website census records, Ron Goodger has undertaken a similar endeavor for the Goodger name and most of its variations. Although the website is still under construction, the census data can be viewed as it becomes available in the site directory at
www.geocities.com/lrgoodger/census.
The files are in Microsoft rich text format (.rtf) and should load into most browsers. Census years 1790 - 1880 have been transcribed and are available for viewing. There are names available in the 1850 - 1870 census' files that to my knowledge are not searchable anywhere else (the 1880 census is fully transcribed on the LDS website). On most sites, only the heads of households are searchable in the indexes.
The files include surname spellings that could conceivably have been pronounced similarly to Goodger, such as Goocher, Gouger, Goodyer, etc. My own direct line appears in various census' as Goodger, Gouger and Goodyear (the Goodyear group was included only through 1840 since it quickly became too massive an undertaking).
The files are as complete as could be managed from data available online, but are certain to contain obmissions. If you are aware of an error or obmission, please contact Ron directly and he will make corrections. Many of the entries that come up in searches on online services are obvious transcription errors or typos when the actual images are consulted. Those that were found to be so are omitted in the files on this site.
