I was looking for the meaning of the "Gombas" name, and your message came up. I"m from NJ, we could be related somehow, but I doubt it!

Hi Lisa,
The word Gombás means fungus or mushroom in hungarian. So, taking that people usually took their trade as their last name it means that your ancestor picked mushrooms for a living or was well known for picking mushrooms.
Now, for the family part. What do you have on your Gombas line? I have traced my tree back to the 1730's in Hungary.
Best Regards,
Nick M. Gombash

Hey Nick! I have been researching for quite some time about my grandmother Mary (Marie) Agnes Gombas. She came over with her brother, sister, and mother on the La Lorraine in December 1911. She was 3 so she didn't remember much about it, and when she died a few years ago I really wanted to know more. She was born in St. Veith Austria. I know a lot about that side of the family now. Let me know if you need anything, maybe we're related :) She had siblings and I don't know anything about their children or grandchildren so it's a possibility.
