Ancestors of Jesse Goman, Fishkill NY, late 1700s
I'm looking for the ancestors of my g-g-g-grandfather, Jesse Goman, who married Sarah Healy in Fishkill, Dutchess County, NY around 1800. The children of Jesse and Sarah were Jarvis W., b. 1800; John Goman Sr. (married Catherine Dickson daughter of John Dickson and Elizabeth Doxsee), b. 1802; Eliza, born 1804; Olivia, born 1810; Caroline, born 1812; Lydia, born 1814; Mary S., born 1816; David, born 1818; Frances J., born 1820; James H., born 1822; and Delphine, born 1824. I have no other information on the children of that marriage except for the line of John Goman, Sr.
According to the family history that my g-grandfather, John Goman Jr., wrote, the father of Jesse Goman was born in Rhode Island and was married to Mary Taft (which I suspect was actually Tefft), also of Rhode Island. He didn't remember the first name of Jesse's father.
Any help on that line would be appreciated!

Re: Ancestors of Jesse Goman, Fishkill NY, late 1700s
Sounds like there might be a connection. Both John and William are common names in my Goman ancestry. My great-grandfather and g-g-grandfather were both named John. Do you happen to know where in upstate NY your g-uncle came from? I know of a branch of the Gomans who were in Washington County, and some of them might still be there. Two of them are in close touch with me (they're both third cousins of mine) -- one in Idaho and the other in Missouri. You can e-mail me directly if you like -- Up2Nutrix@aol.com

The John Goman that she is talking about lived in Easton NY, Washington County. He had several Brothers. I remember there was Howard, Charles. He also had some Sisters. I am also related to the same Gomans..

Re: Ancestors of Jesse Goman, Fishkill NY, late 1700s
Was this John Dutcher Goman, born October 31, 1918? I got his family from one of my Goman third cousins, and it has him born in Greenwich, not Easton. But there are brothers Howard and Charles, and a whole lot of other siblings, too.
I think you and I need to get together off the Ancestry list and share what we have on the Goman family. It sure looks as if you and I are cousins, all right!

Re: Ancestors of Jesse Goman, Fishkill NY, late 1700s
For the gentleman in Duluth, MN -- To tell you the truth, I don't know where my own immigrant Goman ancestors came from. I've seen the name in the West Country of England, and a NY telephone directory has quite a list of Gomans who are evidently Jewish. Our family has been Protestant as far back as I can trace it. But, interestingly, since you're from Minnesota, I have a dear friend who was married in or near Minneapolis, back in the spring of 1967, by a Catholic priest named Father Joseph Goman.

Jarvis W Goman, 1800-1884
I think Jarvis W Goman married Jane N Somebody c1806-1884. They are in the Poughkeepsie 1880 census, and Jarvis says he was born in New York, his father was born in Rhode Island, and his mother was born in New York. One of Jarvis and Jane's children, I think, was Thomas Edward Goman c1843-1907 who married Sarah Fredrika Rees 1849-1893, daughter of Ambrose Rees 1808-1862 and Adah M Tuttle 1822-1891. All these folks are buried in the Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery. Anyone familiar with this line?
