Plenty of Golas family in Ohio! Just wanted to send out a general message and find out if anyone had info on the origin of our last name. Regards...Don Golas

My father's last name is Golas. His father, John, came over from Poland. Golas is a shortened name. Although I can pronounce the original last name, I don't know how to spell it. If you'd like to know, I can ask my dad.

My grandfather, Mikolaj Golasz came from Plewki Poland/Russia in 1899. Rozalia Golasz, his sister, arrived in 1900. Eventually the name was shortened as the Polish pronounciation of Golasz is a bit tricky. There are many people with the last name "Golas" from various areas of Poland listed on passenger lists from ships arriving the U.S.A. near the turn of the century. Also people of Austrian and Swiss origins have that name. So I presume the name Golas is NOT a shortened version in many cases.

Sounds like a number of Golas Descendants came over from Poland in the 1900's. My family is in Cleveland. Frank Golas, my great grandfather had two kids-Steve(D-1997) and Helen. Steve, my grandfather had two sons Ronald(49), and my father Steven Robert Golas (56)...not to sure if Frank had a brother or how he came to Clevland..would love to know how to ascertain info from Golas' that came over from Poland/Russia?

As far as I know our last name means naked person in polish. This has been told to me by two different people on two different occasions by people who were both fluent in polish.
Kinda makes you wonder, if the name wasn't shortened upon entry into the United States, what sort of ancestors we had given the fact that surnames typically came from actions that identified a person, doesn't it?

Thanks for the info....I did read some memo's from other Golas' who said our name was shortened from Golasz. Polish/Russian- Apparently a number of our ancestors came over in the late 1800 and early 1900...
I'm in Cleveland....
Take care.

The grandparents of my 4th-great-grandfather, Mikolaj Stécków, were listed as Jan Stécków and Agnieszka Gołas…this name shows up, spelled just that way, but with the slash through the letter “L,” all over Kozowa. It is often mistaken for Gotas. She would have born in the late 1700’s.

Re: Meaning of our last name
In one "Names" book it states that the name is of Russian origin and means "man with a loud or unusual voice". In Polish it is a "nickname" or a synonym for a naked person, just as in English by using word butt (as in to butt heads) or ass (as in donkey).
