family reunion

Going/ Goin/ Goins Family Reunion
Cumberland Gap, TN
Invitation to all descendants of Thomas Going (ca. 1729-1797)
of Randolph County, North Carolina.
In the past, this reunion has only involved descendants of Thomas’ son Burton. With the recent proof that the Thomas Goin, American Revolutionary soldier of Claiborne County, TN, was an older son of the Thomas Going of NC, we especially invite his descendants as well. We haven’t met any of the descendants of Thomas’ other children – William, Burgess, Vina, Haley and Elizabeth – but they are most welcome as well.
The reunion is being held at the Russell Berkau Memorial Park, in Cumberland Gap, TN on Saturday June 8, 2013. The park is reserved for our reunion from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. There will be a pot luck picnic at 12:00. Please bring a covered dish, salad or dessert to share, along with your own soft drinks. It is a nice, clean park, near the historic Iron Furnace, with plenty of tables. You may wish to bring lawn chairs. You’re encouraged to come early and stay late to meet and visit with your cousins (those already acquainted with, as well as those who may be new-found).
Those who may be interested in genealogy are encouraged to meet Eddie Goins of Missouri, Pat Goin Jones of Kansas, Sherry Goin of Illinois and Roger Edmondson of Tennessee (and any others working on genealogy) to share family information.
The reunion is being held in conjunction with the Genealogy Jamboree – June 6th – 8th. This event draws several thousand visitors to Cumberland Gap each year. Besides the events and booths involving genealogy, there will be lots of events dealing with the history and heritage of our pioneer ancestors. A great time will be had by all who can attend. You can find more information, including lodging, on the Jamboree website - www.genealogyjamboree.us.
For more information please contact:
Eddie Goins (MO) Joyce Ogan (TN)
417-880-4258 423-258-1427

I am looking for any information on my great-grandmother Nancy J Goins Clark. She married John Wesley Clark and lived in Blount County, Tennessee.

I am at a dead end on both Nancy and John. I can find their marriage record and Nancy appears in the 1900 census, but after that nothing. No death record, buriel information, nothing. I pulled my grandmother's death certificate and the information on that states "mother unknown". John Wesley appears in the 1910 census and then nothing after that. Help!
I have seen several family trees that listed his wife as Rhoda Dorcus Thompson. However, none of these trees showed proof of their marriage or her name. I did find a marriage in the Tennessee State Marriages for Alfred Gowen & Rhoda Darows/Darius. Would greatly appreciate hearing from someone about her name and whether they have found proof of their marriage.
Thank you
Tonia

GOINS, GOIN, GOENS, GOEN Family - DNA Project (16 months later)

(updated: 16 Nov 2012)

We began our GUIN,GWIN,GUYN,GWYN DNA Project and variant surnames on 11 Jul 2011. Shortly after this, (Oct 2011) we expanded the project as "1st official combined project" to include the surnames related to CUIN-O'CUINN-McCUINN, GINN-GUINNESS, GOEN-GOINS, McGINNIS-McGUINNESS, QUIN-QUINN, and WINN-WYNNE and their related surnames as a supplement to traditional genealogical research. Also, we suspect similar origins between several of these groups going back 2000 years, which only DNA can prove. If your surname is a variant of the previously mentioned names, please consider joining our combined project as your Secondary or Primary choice. There is "No Limit" to the number of projects in which you can participate.

In our first year the GINN,GUIN,GWIN,GUYN,GWYN Project achieved 75 project members (now at 117), due to those which have already tested. We are encouraging new members to reach out and test their loved ones, during this period while prices at their lowest. We have many participants in all categories of Y-DNA testing, mtDNA testing and Autosomal DNA testing, but most likely do not have your specific branch going back to the early 1800's to confirm a positive match. (see current Holiday Sales Promotion)

With the help of several administrators who have many years of genealogical experience and fellow project members, our accomplishments have included resolving discrepancies with many family trees found on other web sites. We have privately assisted with several adoption cases and solved several non-paternal events (NPE). But mostly, we have been able to correctly displayed the genetic proof of genealogical connections to several branches of specific families for your interpretation. With our current members and knowledge of DNA results from other sources, we have also confirmed in three areas of the DNA spectrum that there is a very close DNA association between several COEN-COYNE, QUIN-GUINN, and GUINN-GWINN families, and several O'QUINN and O'GUIN families. Those particular circumstances might not apply to your specific families, but there may be other possible combinations of "very close associations" which we hope to discover.

We do not have all the answers, but our ongoing efforts will continue for many years as we learn about your particular families DNA origins and the ability compare matches for proper grouping, in a timely manner. We will continue to explore family connections for future participation.

(a.) our Background Page: http://www.familytreedna.com/public/GuinnGwinn/default.aspx
(b.) our Y-DNA Participants: http://www.familytreedna.com/public/GuinnGwinn/default.aspx?...
(c.) our mtDNA Participants: http://www.familytreedna.com/public/GuinnGwinn/default.aspx?...
(d.) our Autosomal Participants: http://www.familytreedna.com/public/GuinnGwinn/default.aspx?...
**** Please note that our project is only "one" out of 7,000 more projects currently established with FTDNA.

Sincerely,
Michael A.
Re: William Goin/Goins and Anastascia Sullivan DNA for relationships

I'm not sure I follow you on the "financial front", but I will say that the connection to John Phelps appears solid. William & Annester Gowin's son, Joseph, married Judith Pollard whose parents were Francis Pollard and Elizabeth "Betty" Phelps. The parents of Betty Phelps are John and Mary Phelps. In John's will of 1772, Betty was recorded. Will Book “A” page 137, lists wife, Mary and children, Jane, Judith, Sarah, Ann, Mary, Betty, John, and Aggey.

As you may know, the word "burgess" means he was an elected official. The House of Burgess was created by the Virginia Company to encourage English craftsmen to settle in North America and to make conditions in the colony more agreeable for its current inhabitants. John Phelps served with William Callaway as a burgess from the newly formed Bedford County.

I've often wondered if Annester is a Callaway. Our William Gowin was connected via William Callaway to some very influential people of the period and his son, Joseph, married the granddaughter of John Phelps. William Gowin was not recorded on many records within the county because he was an average law abiding citizen and farmer. As I mentioned, he was "friends" or had strong acquaintances with influential people. If he were wealthy, educated, and English, he may have been connected in a way that would have allowed greater presence. However, he was none of the above. He seemed to "know his place". By that I mean he was well respected (via association, witness to deeds, etc.), but didn't overstep his boundary. Knowing ones place in this period was very important. The English wanted everyone under British rule to obey the law (which included going to church), and follow the rules of the period.

I haven't found anything to suggest that the Gowin family had a large sum of money for the period. William Gowin started out with very humble beginnings and the first record we have of him purchasing land isn't until 1762 that was finalized in 1780, although he very likely lived on it for this period. He may have been living on William Callaway's land from his first record in 1752 until he was able to purchase land in 1762, or the record of his first purchase(s) were lost. If the survey of land in 1762 was his first (and I believe it was), then he saved money for a period of 10 years, or possibly 6 years after his legal age, before he bought land.

Association by itself didn't grant you any specific rights or money. If there was a dowry that Annester brought to the marriage, it must have also been very small. Which is why I struggle with what her surname may have been. There are many possibilities, but we know Sullivan is not one of them.

I'm not sure if that answered your question though. Hopefully so.

All the best,
Robert
Hi Robert, I want to thank you for the work you are doing to clear up any question we have on the William Goin/Gowin line.
I think you have done a great service by clarifying the Sullivan connection. On the financial front, I'm curious about the Phelps connection since John Phelps was involved with the Members of the House of Burgess. Are these connections still valid?

Re: William Goin/Goins and Anastascia Sullivan DNA for relationships

We have been able to confirm through written records that there is zero connection between the William Gowan & Annastacia Sullivan of Goochland County and my ancestors, William Gowin & Annester Unknown of Bedford County, VA. This debunks the theory that Annester is "Annastacia Sullivan".

I spell William's name as "GOWIN" because that is how it was first recorded in 1752 when he was a tithable to William Callaway. The surname changed many times because William and his children were not literate and it was recorded by scribes who spelled in those days using phonetics with no standard English writing and they would even record it differently within the same document.

We know our William Gowin was at least 18 years of age in 1752 when he was likely working for William Callaway or was his apprentice. Records for this portion of the county do not exist for 1751 so we don't know if he resided there in that year. We do know that he was there until the early 1800's when he, Annester, and most of his family moved on to Madison County, KY. We also know that he was not from Goochland County prior to 1751 using tax and court records for that county that do exist. Whether or not our William is the immigrant is still out for debate and we may never know since many records do not exist today.

There is much speculation about who were the sons of William & Annester. There are facts we do know: 1) because this couple is not the same couple as the Goochland County couple we can rule out the two children born of the Goochland couple and recorded by the Rev. William Douglass; 2) There doesn't seem to be a relation to ANY variant surname (Gowin, Gowan, Going, Gowen, Goin, etc.) in this portion of Virginia based on Y-DNA analysis; 3) To date, 9 desendants from three of William & Annester's sons (William Jr., Joseph, and Daniel) have participated in Y-DNA analysis and they match nearly 100% to one another and none of them knew one another prior to the analysis; 4) Annester provided sworn testimony for Joseph on his Rev War pension while William Jr. and Daniel are derived by tax records, deeds, etc. and Y-DNA; 4) other "Gowen's" living in this area and who descend from William Gowen & Katherine Patterson or John Gowen & Mary Keiffe who are further descendants of the African slave, Mihil, ARE NOT related and this has been verified through Y-DNA analysis from male descendants on both sides. The Haplogroup of male descendants of Mihil are E1b1, which is African and consistent with their family's documented lineage.

No other male "Gowin" descendants whose ancestors are considered possible sons of William & Annester have participated in Y-DNA analysis. This makes it challenging to know if the other male Gowin's connected were grandsons, sons, or other relative of William & Annester or not related. Researchers have applied multiple children to William & Annester without solid proof. We are 100% certain that William Jr., Joseph, and Daniel were sons, but all others are undocumented.

Of those who participated in Y-DNA analysis, we walked up our "Gowin" male family tree and because the 3 sons descendants match, we can strongly infer that William Sr.'s Y-DNA was the same and is currently known as Haplogroup I2b1a1 (SNP M223+, M284+, L126+, L137+, L369+) or aka "Isles-Scot". In some genealogical areas this subclade is known as Haplogroup I2a2a1a1 or simply as "L369". It is believed that this small subclade has been on the British Isles for over 4,500 years and is indigenous to this area. The highest concentration is in Scotland. The only Irish connection appears to be with those very distant Gaelic surnames with Irish heraldry and who were known to be resident on both Ireland and Scotland.

The results of William & Annester's male descendants are located at the McGowan DNA Project at the lab of Family Tree DNA: http://www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/mcgowan/results and are provided in the "I2b1" grouping. They are only provided by the last name of the donor. Because these descendants also match with a "McGowan" from Scotland, it is highly possible that the "Gowin" name was once "McGowan" in early period.

All the best,
Robert

Wish I could answer that question. I know that Charles Rose was b in King George County as the Rose family has been there since the early 1700's. Maybe Charles Goins moved to Westmoreland County where he met & marr Elizabeth Blair. I was not aware that Charles & Lucinda had moved to KY until I got your post. let me know if you figure it out.
Ollie

I thought I might have names from his 1st marriage, but not finding it at the moment. I have Charles death date as 1838, and Lucinda d. 1858. I need to work more on this lineage.
I've a question for you. What info do you have of Charles and Lucinda living in King George County ? Lucinda's father Charles Goins married Elizabeth Blair (of Westmoreland County. I've been trying to figure out how they met, since Charles Goins was from Henry County. A fair distance apart for the two, to have met. Thanks for any info. Greg

Hi, your query is a little old, but I have some info if you've not discovered already. I have a Lucinda Goins b. 1788 VA, parents were Charles and Elizabeth (Blair) Goins. Lucinda married Charles Rose on 16 Oct 1812, in Harrison County, KY. Family moved to Gallatin County, KY with Lucinda's Goins kin about 1815. I have a 1830 Gallatin County, KY census for Charles Rose age 60-70 with wife age 30-40, and 7 children. The 1840 Gallatin County census shows Lucinda Rose age 30-40(off by at least 12 years ?), widowed, with 5 children, 1 Male 20-30, and 1 Female 20-30. Only child I have info on is Lucretia b. unk, m. Robert Furnish on 17 Mar 1829 (not verified). Charles Rose was much older, and had been married previously. Hope this helps. Greg Bennatt

He served three generations of the Buntin family as slave and servant. When the war broke out his old master, as he always called his former owner, had so much confidence in him and his integrity that he gave him a bunch of forty horses, with instructions to dodge the armies. This old Ben did successfully for more than three years and did not bring them home until "old Master" told him he thought things were safe."

Benjamin Buntin was born into Slavery in Sumner County, Tennessee, about 1823. The Buntin plantation was in the northwest corner of Sumner County near the towns of Mitchellville and Portland, and near the Robertson County line. At the time of the Civil War, the Buntin plantation was owned by Thomas Buntin, a native of North Carolina. Thomas Buntin was the “old Master” referred to by Ben Buntin.

THREE GENERATIONS OF BUNTIN SLAVE OWNERS IN SUMNER COUNTY, TN

1st generation – John Buntin was on the 1790 Census of Pitt County, North Carolina. He was shown as owning no slaves. John brought his family, including adult sons, to northern middle Tennessee by 1800. Some of his sons settled in what became Robertson County and some in Sumner County. John Buntin’s Will was probated in Sumner County in 1803. His heirs were his wife Elizabeth, sons Joseph and William, daughter Sarah, and grandson John Kerr. His Will mentions one Slave by name, “my Negro wench LUCIE”, who he left to his wife.

2nd generation – William Buntin was born in NC in 1770 and died in Sumner County, TN in 1831. He married Mary Cowan (1776-1845) in Rowan County, NC in 1793. They are buried in the Dry Fork Cumberland Presbyterian Church cemetery.

3rd generation – Thomas Buntin (“old master”) was born in NC in 1799. He came to Tennessee as a toddler with his parents and grandparents. He married Elizabeth “Betsey” Turner in 1819 in Sumner County. The 1820 Census shows Thomas owning 2 Slaves. By the 1850 Slave Schedule, Thomas was the owner of 36 Slaves*. Thomas was the only Buntin listed in Sumner County as owning Slaves in 1850 In 1850, Thomas was appointed Justice of the Peace. An 1858 Bill of Sale, recorded in Sumner County, shows that Thomas bought a Slave named Margaret from William C. Roney.*** In 1860 Thomas was also listed as owning 36 Slaves and he was the only Buntin Slave owner. The 1860 Census shows Thomas owned real estate valued at $35,455.00. The value of his personal property (which included the value of his slaves and those 40 horses) was $30,385.00. The 1850 and 1860 Census show Thomas and Betsey with the following children: James William born about 1829, Adelia (who married Dr. Henry Thompson) born about 1833, Mary born about 1837, John Thomas born about 1842 (married Sally Perdue) and Jane born about 1841. There may have been more children. Thomas died January 1865 and Elizabeth died December 1881.

BENJAMIN BUNTIN AND HIS FAMILY
Ben’s parents were probably also owned by either Thomas Buntin or his father William Buntin. The names of Ben’s parents are unknown to this author. Ben was a Slave for Thomas Buntin and then, as a free man, remained a servant to the widow and children of Thomas Buntin.

Ben’s wife was named Catherine. She was born between 1820 to 1832 in Sumner County, TN. Although no marriage record is found for them, they are together after emancipation on the 1870 and 1880 Census. Catherine was dead before the 1900 Census. The Death Certificates of their two daughters give different maiden/slave names for Catherine. The Death Certificate of daughter Katie gives her mother’s maiden/slave name as HULSEY. The Death Certificate of daughter Delia gives her mother’s maiden/slave name as WILKS.

I am inclined to believe that Catherine was owned by one of the Wilks family members. The Hulsey family did not appear in Sumner County until the 1850 Census. The Hulsey family is not found on the 1850 or 1860 Slave Schedules. On the other hand, 4 Wilks households were on the 1820 Census of Sumner County, shown as owing a total of 17 Slaves. By the 1850 Slave Schedule, there were households for John Wilks with 21 Slaves, and Richard Wilks with 2 male slaves. On the 1860 Slave Schedule there were 4 Wilks households owning a total of 33 Slaves.

Ben and Catherine are shown on the 1870 Census of Sumner County with 4 children. Ben is shown as age 43, a Blacksmith, born in TN, with $200 worth of personal property. Catherine is shown as age 38 and born in TN. Three of the four known children of Ben and Catherine were born Slaves. The children were Caty/Katie born about 1853, Larry born about 1857, John born about 1862, and Adelia Rachael (Delia) born free in 1865. I have not found any more information about sons Larry and John.

The 1880 Census of Sumner County shows Ben as age 50, working on farm, TN TN TN. Catherine is shown as age 60, TN TN TN. Daughters Katie 24 and Rachel D. 19 are living in the household. Ben next appears on the 1891 Tennessee Male Voters Census.

The 1900 Census of District 16, shows Ben as a widower. His age and birth month/year state unknown. His daughter Katie is living with him. She is shown as single, age unknown, birth month June, birth year unknown. Neither has an occupation listed.

Katie Buntin appears on the 1920 Census of Sumner County living in the household of her sister Delia Buntin Gilbert. She is shown as age 60 and a widow. Katie’s Death Certificate states that she died May 18, 1923 in Sumner County. The informant was Katie’s sister Delia. Delia stated the following: Katie was single, date of birth unknown but supposed to be age 65, worked as a house maid, born Robertson County, father Ben Buntin born Robertson County, mother Catherine Helsuy (sic) (s/b Hulsey) born Sumner County. Katie was buried May 20, 1923 in the African American Buntin Cemetery****.

Adelia (Delia) Rachel Buntin married Green Gilbert between 1880 and 1887. Adelia and Green appear on the 1910 Sumner County Census showing Green as a farmer born in TN in 1855. It is stated that they have been married 23 years and that Adelia is the mother of no children. However the 1920 Census shows their household as having a son, age 13, named Hubert Gilbert. Adelia’s sister Katie Buntin is also living with them. The 1930 Census of Sumner County shows Green as age 71 and married at age 21. Rachel is shown as age 65 and married at age 15.

Delia Rachel Buntin Gilbert’s Death Certificate shows that she died March 4, 1851, at 1:00 a. m. in Sumner County. It states that she was widowed, age 94 and born July 15, 1856 (Note – all Census records show her as born 1865). Her occupation was shown as a Domestic.
Hello, my Mother was Precilla (Payne) Booker and we lived in Nashville. Her Mother was Rachel aka Puss Goin. You may remember Pauline and her husband Bill that would come down from IL. I remember Uncle Garner that raised hogs and lived a few miles down the road from Aunt Lu. that would always fuss about her chickens. And Uncle (Vudge)that I now know was Virgil who was married to a very dark skin woman named Caroline. I also remember a Aunt Jo. whos sister I think was Eddie that married a man named Jake - Buntin(?) and lived in Franklin Ky. I also remember going to a church every frist Sunday in September for the basket rally.

Nathan Goins (McGowan) born 1820, Grainger TN. His son Lafayette (Fate), born 1855, Hamilton Co, TN. Fate married Suzanne Caroline Harwig, born 1855 in Indiana and died in 1908, Oklahoma. Fate died between 1897 and 1900 near Gore, Sequoyah Co, OK. His daughter Pearl was born in 1894 in Independence Ark. She went by the surname of McGowan, but always told us that it used to Goins. They were supposedly Cherokee, but haven't been able to prove anything. Thanks for any help you might be able to give.

Tammy

I was excited to read your post! I have been looking for this family for quite some time, and they have been elusive. My ex-husbands grandmother was Pearl McGowan whose father was Fate (Lafayette) McGowan or Goins. He died when she was only three so she didn't have much knowledge of his family. I have found some info from ancestry.com, but grandma always said that her grandmother was a part of "The Trail of Tears" and was related to Chief John Ross. I would love to either prove or disprove that theory. I would be interested in anything you can tell me. Thank you!
Looking for information on Armstead Goins born circa 1820's. Married a Permelia Catherine Haggard. They are shown as a married couple on 1850 census in Todd Co., KY. They resided in Carlisle and Hickman Counties. Permelia is buried in Ballard Co., Ky, along with sibs, children and grandchildren. No sign of Armstead who died probably between 1868 & 1870. I don't know if he made it to Ballard or died somewhere along the way. His youngest child, my great-grandmother Willie Ann Goins, was born in 1868 and Permelia is a widow by the census of 1870. He's a brick wall for me leaving no paper trail that I can find and no headstone.

Thanks, Terry
Paducah, KY

Armstead died circa 1868-1870, since his last child was born in 1868 and his wife was a widow in 1870. They were in Todd Co., in 1850 and travelled through Hickman and Carlisle Co.'s. Permelia is buried in Ballard Co. along with some siblings, children and grandchildren. I find no stone or death records for him, the only records I can find are census records, a true brick wall.
Mary or Margaret "Patsy" Goins and Garrett Goins

I have been trying to find out if these two people are closely connected and reached a dead end. Here's what I have so far:

Garrett Goins, born about 1804 in Kentucky, married Hulda Faley (died 1858), and he was still alive in the 1880 census (Hoggins School House, Gallatin, Ky.); numerous children per 1850 and 1860 Gallatin census records; and there is a Garret Goins in the 1830 Gallatin census. I haven't found a death record and have no information about his parents or siblings.

All I have on "Patsy" is heresay (giving birth year as 1790 and death between 1850 & 1860) and her daughter Lucrecia Rose's death record giving parents as Randolph and Mary Jones.

Any help is appreciated!

GOINS-GREEN

The 1870 and 1880 Kalamazoo schedules show that Emily and Gabriel, who married 8 Jan 1863, have ten children. I believe Lucinda b.1825 is Emily's step-daughter. I also strongly believe the other nine is from the union of Emily and Gabriel; they include Verlinda b. 1865, Sopinia b. 1869, Gabriel b. 1872, Abraham b. 1876, Michael b. 1877 d. 1933, Harriet Francis Green b and d. 1878, Eva May b. 1879 d. 1894, Mary E Green b. 1881 and Harry Green b and d 1886. However Michael and Verlinda had returned to Ohio as they are enumerated in the 1870 Belmont County Census and I found Benjamin Stewart's marriage to Helen Carter in Washington County, Ohio which means he returned to Ohio as well only to make it back to Michigan were he died in 1922. Roswell also left Michigan but he went to Pennsylvania.

In the Kalamazoo Gazette I found word of Eva's (Emily's daughter) death as she was set to return from visiting her sister ( I don't know which one?) in Grand Rapids. What I do know is that Eva was fifteen and it was around Christmas.

I also found word of Abraham's (Able's) marriage license and marriage to Lily Rosetta May Henley.

Finally circa 20 March 1895 in the Kalamazoo Gabriel's obituary it reads: Gabriel Green died Tuesday morning at 7:30 at his home, 809 Third Street of dropsy, at the age of 75 years. He had been ill a week and grew worse from Friday. He leaves seven children Mrs. Lincoln Moss, Gabriel, Abraham, Mercy all of this city, Charles, Harvey; Mrs James Ward of Benton Harbor. He leaves a brother Samuel Green who it is thought lives in Ludington.

Before I found these two pieces of information I already knew that Emily died at the age of 52 in 1898. I believe I have her death certificate among my copious records.

I am looking for any and all relatives of the GOINS-GREEN family.

GOINS-BASSETT

Hello list,

I just found a Social News announcement in the Canton (OH) Repository about the nuptials of Gertrude Goins b. 1881 and DeVoe or De Voe Bassett b.1879. I believe they were both native Pennsylvanians. They married 3 December, 1916 at St. Timothy's Church of said city.

While Devoe may have remained in the Keystone State, Gertrude moved to Canton with her parents Roswell James Goins and Elizabeth Murrerlls-Goins. They are in the Pennsylvania Censuses 1880 and Ohio Censuses for 1900 and 1910. Her father passed away 1912 and her mother I am not sure.

I have tried Ancestry.com city directories but they seem to be in beta at the moment.

If you have anyone information about either one of these individuals I would kindly appreciate it if you would let me know.

Thanks in advance!
