Dear Maureen,
Mary Ann Goheen, who married James Elliott in Michigan, was born in Ontario about 1842. She was the daughter of Charles Goheen (1819-1850) and Elizabeth Boyd. She was the eldest of three; she and her brothers, James Thomas (1845-1916) and Charles (1848-1934) were all quite young when their father died. The young widow took her three small children home to her father, Robert Boyd, and lived with him. He was incapacitated by the loss of a leg in the Napoleonic wars. Living on a nearby farm with his four children was a young widower, Robert Beggs. They married and had five more children. They built a large stone house a few miles north of Port Hope, Ontario, a home for their large brood.
It still stands.
Their second youngest, Elizabeth Ann Beggs, married William Henry Goheen, and so, became my grandmother.
And so, Maureen, if you are descended from Mary Ann Goheen, we are double cousins! If you are interested, I can give you more information about Mary Ann Goheen.
Best wishes to you, and all Goheen cousins everywhere! Please note my new e-mail address -
