Goffinets in Perry County, Indiana

I have been working on the Goffinet family in Perry County, Indiana and have pretty much been able to sort out all the early settlers, their spouses, their children, etc.

There are 7 distinct Goffinet families that came to Perry County prior to 1880. These families are Lambert A. & Veronique Goffinet, Jean Joseph Goffinet, Lambert and Anne Marguerite Goffinet, Victor & Catherine Goffinet, Andrew and Mary Jane Goffinet, John Baptist and Ann Marie Goffinet, and Henri Goffinet. Many of the names of these families are similar but by cross referencing with the various census reports, baptism records, marriage records, and cemetery records we can begin to seperate out who is who.

My goal has been to separate these families up to the
1880 census and into the 1900 census so if you can trace your Goffinet family connections back to then, I can show you what I have on back to Belgium.

I would like to hear from any intersted parties so I can see if what I have matches up with other Goffinet researchers. I still have some questions so any help would be appreciated. My line comes thru Andrew and Mary Jane Goffinet who immigrated to Perry County in 1842.

Best Regards,
Jack Haywood

Greetings Jack,
Have not been working on the Goffinet line for quite a while. You have been hard at it I see. Been awhile since we corresponded.
My line is Jean and Anne-Marie GOFFINET Goffinet > Pierre and Euphrasia FAYS Goffinet > James Thomas and Emily Ellen GOFFINET Cassidy > Ansel Hugh and Pearl Agnes CASSIDY McMillan > My parents > Me.
Just received word last night; the last of the 10 children of James and Emily Cassidy passed away last week.
Will send you an e with that information.

Hi Rebecca,
Thanks for the update. I think i have done all the damage i can do on this side of the family. I am going to do some final checking and then post this tree soon.

You probably know this but Jean Baptiste Goffinet was the brother of Jeanne Marie Goffinet(the wife of Andre Jean Goffinet, my ancestors). Anne Marie, wife of Jean Baptiste, was the sister of Anne Marguerite Goffinet (widow, died at sea, 1854,enroute to US) and Victor Goffinet, died 1868, buried St. Augustine Church Cemetery. I have not been able to accout for gravesite of Anne Marie Goffinet-it may have been unmarked, but I would find that out of character.

That makes 4 of the Perry County Goffinet families. The other three were Lambert Albert Goffinet, his brother Jean Joseph Goffinet and a son of Henri Goffinet, Francoise Goffinet who immigrated in 1872.

My research shows Jean-Baptiste GOFFINET b. 1748 in Jamoigne, Belgium married Marie-Joseph ROGIER. According to your research, is she a second wife of Jean-Baptiste? I show they are parents of my 3rd gr/grandfather Lambert GOFFINET, died 1868 in Leopold, Perry Co, IN.

My gr/grandfather Nicholas GOFFINET b. 1835 in Les Bulles, Belgium (son of Lambert & Veronique GOFFINET) married Seraphine LAMBERT in 1869 in Leopold, Indiana. She was born 1845 in Belgium. In Leopold they had two daughters: my gr/grandmother Pauline b. 1870 and her sister Francesca b. 1873. they had a son, Edward O GOFFINET in 1877 in California. They settled in Spokane Washington before 1885. Pauline married John Cornelius TRYON and moved to Lakeport CA before 1900. Francesca married Donat Carmele, a Canadian national before 1895. They moved to Los Angeles. Edward married Sadie Hottman about 1910 and they lived in Spokane with their sons.

QUESTIONS
Any records on these Goffinets? It appears my gr/grandma Pauline was estranged from her siblings and we don't know why. Pauline and John settled in Fresno CA not far from LA where her sister lived, and yet we knew nothing until I found documentation.
Also, are my LAMBERTS related to the GOFFINETS as these two family names are inter-related.
Pls reply to cindy.ruben@charter.net

Hi Cindy,

I am on vacation and I don’t have my genealogy materials with me, but I will get back to you soon.

I can tell you than I have a copy of the 1870, 1880, 1900, 1910 and 1920 Federal Census showing Nicholas and Seraphine together and I have the 1890 Civil War Pension Census as well as Seraphine’s Civil War Widow’s Benefit Application from the mid-1920’s after Nicholas’s death.

Nicholas served in the Civil War on the Union side for only a few months and I have some documentation on that, just don’t remember the details right now.

I also have Frances and Donat Carmele 1900 Census report which shows brother Edward living with them at the time along with their daughter whose name escapes me right now. There was an another child born to that couple prior to 1900 who did not survive.

No info on Pauline other than the 1870 Perry County Census.

I remember seeing some birth records from the children of Edward and Hottman but other details escape me at the moment.

In my mind, there is some question on whether Nicholas is the the son of Lambert and Verionique since they were in the 50’s or 60’s at the time of Nicholas’s birth in which I have to be as 1840. Perhaps you can clear that up for me. Lambert and Veronique are buried in St Augustine Church Cemetery in Perry County Indiana.

Great grandparents were:

Hi Keith,

There were 7 related yet distinct Goffinet families who moved to Perry County from the area around Jamoigne-Les Bulles, Belgium prior to 1880. In the case of your great-great grandfather John, he was the son of Andre Jean Goffinet and Anne Marie Goffinet (nee Goffinet). Andre Jean and Anne Marie Goffinet came to the U.S. in January of 1842 aboard the Mayflower II arriving in New Orleans. They immigrated with the family of Anne Marie’s brother, Jean Baptist Goffinet.

These two Goffinet families were the first Goffinets to arrive in Perry County as the other 5 Goffinet families arrived later. Other families from Belgium with names familiar to most native Perry County residents had already arrived and others arrived later as well.

Most of the Goffinets in Perry County can be directly tied to these two Goffinet families as the other 5 Goffinet families who arrived later (1848-1878) were smaller families, older and tended to move away from Perry County. Some did stay and have descendents in the area, but not many.

When Andre Jean and Anne Marie Goffinet arrived in Indiana, they had 8 children: Mary Catherine, Andrew John, John, Mary Josephine, Ann Katherine, John Joseph, Ann Mary Emily, and Ann Henrietta Harriet. Later, daughter Mary Elizabeth was born in Perry County in January of 1843.

My direct family tree also runs through Andre Jean and Anne Marie. My great-great grandfather was John’s brother, John Joseph.

Anne Marie Goffinet died September 21, 1865. Andre Jean died March 23, 1875. Both are buried in St. Augustine Church Cemetery in Perry County, Indiana.

Your great-grandfather John married Louise Genlain (sp?) October 24, 1854 in Perry County. They had 8 children: Henrietta Harriet Ann Catherine, Louis Joseph, Mary Adolphina, John, Mary Jane, John Baptist Eugene, John Alfred, and Adolph Frank.

John died April 26, 1899 and Louise died December 30, 1917. John and Louise Goffinet are buried in the Old Chapel Cemetery in Perry County. Actually, I do not know exactly where in Perry County this cemetery is located.

Most all of the Goffinets were fruitful and named their children after their brothers, sisters and cousins making the names sometimes hard to track. They sometimes used
Baptismal names and other times, their given names, also creating some confusion. My goal was to document Goffinet names thru the 1880 census and into 1900, if possible.

J. B. Eugene Goffinet married Melanie Louis April 29, 1890 in Perry County. I have Nicholas Louis and Marie Jeanne Aubry listed as the parents of Melanie. By 1900, John and Melanie were the parents of Sylvan Clarence, Adlai, Louise and Gertrude. John and Melanie may have had additional children after 1900 but I have not researched those names. Melanie died about 1929 and Eugene died about 1945. Both are buried in Greenwood Cemetery.

If you have a moment, I would like to know if you have anything you can add or correct. If you would like additional information or dates, I can give that to you as well. I have tracked most of the Perry County Goffinets thru the 1880 and 1900 census reports.

Best regards
Jack Haywood
