Goffinets From Indiana

Hello All,
The Goffinets from Perry County or Southern Indiana have all got to be related. Two families from Belgium came over on the Mayflower II. The families were quite large ranging from 6 to 10 children. They settled in Indiana because it reminded them of their homeland. My ggggrandmother was Marie Catherine Goffinet. She landed in New Orleans on 17 Jan 1842. She was married to John Joseph James in 18 Oct 1842. Her parents were Andre(w) Goffinet and Jeanne-Marie Goffinet. Jeanne-Marie's brother also was on the Mayflower II with his family. If you want more information on the Mayflower II go to this site:

I hope this helps some of you.

Hello Michelle:

I am writing on behalf of my wife, Debra (Goffinet) Harper. Her family is from Perry County, and she as has a strong interest in researching her family history. It is such a coincidince that I found your posting (which was just placed today!) as I thought I would snoop around a bit today.

Debbie's father, Harold, passed away six years ago. His father was Adali Goffinet, and Debbie's mother, Mary (Damin) Goffinet's mother maden name was also Goffinet (although I've been assured there is no direct relationship). I believe Mary came from Derby, and I think Harold was from Troy, but I'm not too sure about that.

Any way, Debbie is out of town until Wednesday, but I am sure she will be intersted in your board, and checking it out to find more of her lineage.

Her e-mail address is Walkinggoddess@aol.com.

Thanks for your efforts.

Goffinets in Indiana

Hi Tim:
I can't wait to talk to Debra. I have tried to do a lot of extensive research on the Goffinet family because they tie in a couple of times with my James Family and Sprinkle Family. These three families intertwine so many times that some times you lose where you are in the family. Has she done much research on her Goffinet family?
When it comes to the male and female having the same last name many times cousins were marrying. My gggggrandparents had a common grandfather. It was his gggggggrandfather and her ggggggrandfather by the name of Claude Goffinet. His sons one from each of his two wives is were the line splits. As you can tell my line is kind of like one big circle. It really gets confusing because they named their children just about alike. For example:
Mary Theresa Goffinet, Mary A Goffinet, Mary Josephine Goffinet, Mary Flarentine Goffinet, Mary Catherine Goffinet, John Joseph Goffinet, John Alphonso Goffinet, John James Goffinet
These are children from one marriage. Later on many are referred to by their middle names to keep them straight. Confusing huh?

Hi Michelle,

You seem to know alot about the history of your family. How did you find out so much? My family has never been much about talking about the history, and now even my grandparents are dead, so there is nobody to ask, and I want so badly to know more.
I had heard my whole life that my grandfather was born in Belgium (at least his father was), so there seems a connection there anyway. His name was Fernand, his father's name was Jules. My father's name is also Jules. Aside from that I do not know much--not even any great aunts or uncles. Maybe you could give me some tips on where to start.

Thanks,
Susan Goffinet

Susan,
Are you close to any older relative? Can your mom or dad offer any information? That's where you really start is with the immediate family then slowly work your way up the ladder so to say. Start off with the youngest members of your family (that would probably be your cousins children.) Aunts and uncles are usually great sources of information on the children and granchildren of the family. Aunts and uncles are also great sources of information on grandparents and sometimes great grandparents. Just nose around a little bit in the family. If you can get a date or two, a burial place, anything really that gives you a thread of something to go on. Granted now don't take anything to heart or for the full truth. Memories fade, stories get mixed up, things like that. Do you know who got the family bible, old family pictures, anything like that? That person probably has awealth of information at their fingertips and doesn't even know it. Well anyway these are just a few suggestions. Does your mother and father still have their birth certificates? On the birth certificates it usually names the father, mother, and their places of birth, their age at the time the baby was born, so on and so on.

Hi:

I have the newspaper article that talked about the Goffinets coming over on the Mayflower and ending up in Leopold Indiana. My mother is a Goffinet, from Neufchateau Belgium and her mother was Clementine Villance married to Auguste Goffinet in Belgium. We think we're related to the family that came here.
