Classification: Query
Surnames: Schmitt, Bebon, Gerlache, Schuffencker, Demur, George, Petit, Goffin
My name is Kevin Schmitt from Farmington, Connecticut, USA. My father is Richard William Schmitt, son of Richard Joseph Schmitt, son of Joseph Matthew Schmitt (see below). I’m chasing the family of Joseph Mathieu Schmitt, born in Gresswiller (Molsheim) France in 1849.
He married Josephine Bebon in Mulhouse, France on 11/27/1871 and reportedly had ten children
From information we have (50th anniversary article in 1921), we know the names of six of the children.
Joseph, Aloyse, Charles, Emil, Eugene, and Alfred.

He moved to Verviers, Belgium with his family sometime after Alfred was born in 1887 and before Joseph Jr. was married in 1897. The information we have, mentions “there some thirty years, came to live in Verviers”. An article in the local newspaper, mentions their 50th wedding anniversary celebration in 1921. The article mentions Laniere and the Vesdre. It looks like all of the children moved to Belgium, except Aloyse who stayed in Mulhouse, France. Joseph’s known children were:
Joseph Matthew Schmitt, (12/21/1872 to 7/30/1938), born in Mulhouse, France, moved to Verviers with the family. He married Victorine Marie Gerlache (11/19/1876 to 11/18/1967), in Verviers on 9/4/1897. She was from Ensival, Belgium. They emigrated to America in 1904, and settled in Woonsocket, Rhode Island. They had five children: Joseph, Blanche, Juliette, Richard (my grandfather) and Marguerite. Joseph died in Woonsocket, Rhode Island on 7/30/1938.
Aloyse Schmitt (11/9/1874 to 11/11/1954) was born in Mulhouse, France. He stayed in France when the family moved. He married Madeline Schuffencker (unknown dates) on 7/12/1919. I have no record of children. He died in Mulhouse in 1954.
Charles Schmitt (11/22/1876 to 7/6/1938) was born in Haguenau, France. He moved to Verviers with his family and married Augustine Josephine Demur (9/15/1881 to 12/17/1932) on 5/16/1903. They had six children: Jeanne, Rene, Maria, Emma, Charles and Henri. They emigrated to America in 1905 and settled in Woonsocket, Rhode Island.
Emil Schmitt (10/12/1877 to 11/29/1958) was born in Haguenau, France. He moved to Verviers with his family. I don’t have any records of a wife or children. He died in Brussells, Belgium in 1958.
Eugene Schmitt (9/28/1879 to 9/29/1904) was born in Haguenau, France. I assume he moved with the family as well. I have no records of a wife or children. He died in 1904 at an unknown location.
Alfred Schmitt (7/5/1877 to 10/10/1962) was born in Mulhouse, France. He moved to Verviers and married Maria Raymonde George. They had two children: Albert (1922 to 5/17/1983) and an unnamed female. Albert married Jenny Petit (unknown birth date to 5/2/1984). They had no known children. Alfred’s unnamed daughter married Roger Pierre Ernest Goffin. Alfred died in Verviers in 1962. and is buried in St Joseph’s Cemetery in section of the cemetery reserved for World War veterans.
To the best of my knowledge, there are no surviving male children, grandchildren, etc. from any of the six Joseph Mathieu Schmitt/Josephine Bebon children with the exception of descendants of Joseph Matthew Schmitt (eldest son).
My son, Kurt Schmitt and my father, Richard W Schmitt, are active in Genealogy, and have been attempting to determine if there are other related Schmitts still alive. Possibilities exist that Emil, Eugene, Alfred or his son Albert had children in France or Belgium. Also, there were reportedly ten children from Joseph and Josephine. We only have names of six of the ten. We have been unsuccessful in finding records of related family.
I hope this chronology helps identify gaps in our research. Feel free to contact me at kws2311@gmail.com.
