Re: Goffe / Patterson New Zealand
Thanks for responding! I apologize for taking so long to get back to you.
At any rate....I'm not sure of relationships. I am certain that GGM, Margaret Cole Patterson spent most of her life in NZ. I located a photo of George Warren Shaw Patterson which is also a rather remarkable likeness to my brother. Thought it worthy of exploring a link, however, GWSP's wife's given name is not mentioned in the text that I have been able to locate.
Also, I will have some information from Invercargill that I have not yet seen---will be released when I visit in 2003.
My GF, Joe, was highly likely to NOT be known to the family as he was unceremoniously "dropped off" in Boston about 1870, as an infant/toddler----some scandal, I assume. <grin> Probably an assignation aboard a boat bound for Scotland from New Zealand; and he could not be brought back to NZ for that reason. Also, GWS Patterson owned ships and had ties to the Northeast part of the US. He was, in part, a gum dealer.
Goffe was his business partner...and tis very likely that the families intermarried on account of that; and on account of the limited number of European women available for marriage at the the time. But it is also quiite possible that Maggie was Maori.

I don't know answer but thought you may be interested that the Colonel was an esteemed member of our organization, the Circumnavigators Club, which his brother, EH Patterson founded. WE have photos in one of our earlier publications of cortege funeral-don't know if killed in the war or what. A John Patterson a descendant in US is lloking for info on family that you may wish to contact. yuppatt@worldnet.att.net .

Re: Goffe / Patterson New Zealand
In response to your previous posting regarding GWS Patterson, member of the Circumnavigator's Club:
Do you have GWS Patterson's birth/death date, by any chance?
And how would I get a copy of the funeral cortege photos, please?
Also, are you aware that GWSP wrote a 125-page account of his trip around the world? Its on file at the National Archives of Australia.
