Anyone interested in the history of John Goffe, b. 1677, d. Sept. 18, 1748 may want to look for a book "John Goffe's Legacy" written by George Woodbury, illustrated by Arthur Conrad, Published by W. W. Norton Company, Inc, New York. Published in 1955. It is very interesting. Jan Bevan Brown, e-mail: suk@soltec.net

My ggggrandmother Martha Goffe was born in 1782 in Millbrook, Hampshire, UK to Roger Goffe and Martha ? - do you think this is anything to do with your John Goffe?

As you can see my name is John Goffe and I believe that I am a direct decendant of Maj. John F. Goffe of Bedford NH. I have been trying to trace back from myself on but have run into a problem because my grandfather was born in NY, I think but not sure where in NY. If you can help me I would really be thankful. Are you related and if so how?

Thanks

John

Hi John,

I am the administrator for the Goff-Gough Surname DNA Study, which is seeking to clarify how various Gough/Goff (and variants) are related. Earlier this week, a descendant of John Goffe 1678-1748 signed up for the Goff-Gough Surname DNA Study. You may see his lineage on the far right hand side of the page at http://home.comcast.net/~philgoff/DNAchartUnplacedGofffamili.... I'm not clear on whether you have a paper trail to John Goffe d 1748. If so, I would be interested in your lineage as we need at least two distantly related participants to match on the DNA markers to confirm a lineage. If you don't have a paper trail to John Goffe, the DNA study may help you prove that you are from this family.

The Goff-Gough Surname DNA Study includes over 40 Gough/Goff males. To date, we have connected 11 Goff, Gough and Gawf lineages into four major families through matching of the Y-chromosome. These 11 families previously had no knowledge that they shared a common Goff/Gough/Gawf ancestor. The DNA Study has proven that the Gough, Goff and Gawf names are used interchangably. Results of the Goff-Gough Surname DNA Study are posted at http://home.comcast.net/~philgoff/DNAresults.htm. Details on how to sign up are at http://home.comcast.net/~philgoff/GoffDNA.htm.

The Goff-Gough Surname DNA Study will show if you share a common ancestor with the other Gough/Goff families in the study. About one or two men join the study each month, so the families against which you are compared is growing. I hope you will consider joining the Goff-Gough Surname DNA Study. Thanks,

Phillip Goff

I also am a descendant of Squire John Goff (1679-1748) ,through his sons, Colonel John Goffe (1700-1786), and Major John Goffe (1728-1813) of Bedford NH, through his son Captain John Goffe (1755-1848) of Bedford NH and North Winfield NY. I am descended from Capt John Goffe's son John Goff (1790-1848) of Bedford NH and Sempronious NY. Captain John Goffe also had sons, Stephen (1782-) Frederick (1787-1839); Joseph (1792-), Theodore (1794-1881), Ephraim (1797-1882), Hiram (1802-), and Orange (1806-1830). I have joined the Goff Surname DNA Study in the hope of establishing our signature haplotype and tracing our ancestry back to our English/Welsh ancestors. Hope you will too.

My name is John Frederick Goffe, which is the name of the resturant in the Sheraton Hotel in New Hampshire. There are letters from John F. Goffe to his wife posted there. I believe I am a direct decendent of this family. As a note. General William Goffe of Cromwell's Army fled to New Hampshire to avoid King Charles the II's death squad.

I may do the DNA test.

I had my Y-DNA analyzed by Family Tree DNA for 67 loci in 2009. If you have yours analyzed we will most likely share the same haplotype, and Phil Goff would be very interested in the results too.
