I am a novice at this and just looking for my mother's
relatives.

My great grandfather was Fred Goess born 1878 and died around 1959. He was an iron worker and he was self employed, married to Mary Pryor, from Ireland in approx 1901 and they moved from Brooklyn to Staten Island .They had two sons. Fred and Dan.
Fred married my mothers mother, also Mary and they had 4 daughters in New Jersey. Gloria, Dorothy Maryann and Helen,
My mom is the last surviving, Dorothy born in 1928.
Dan never married, stayed in Staten Island and is buried there along with my ggrandparents@Oceanside Cemetery in Staten Island.
I think we are the same family and that photo of Fred looks like him. He did have a sister Barbara & a brother Otto for sure, but don't know thee other names.

My email is lettierisusan@gmail.com
Please correspond.
Susan Lettieri Fair lawn NJ
The great great granddparents were Christian and Regina and they had a younger son Otto.

Hello!!

I'm so glad to hear from you! I'm Barbara, and I live in Nassau County- Wantagh to be exact. I am the granddaughter of Frederick George Goess. I would love to share info, and Dianne (who posted in this thread, read back) has gone above and beyond- and managed to 'jump the pond' back to Germany! What's the best way for you to communicate? My e-mail is Babsbeast@aol.com...

Should have done more reading. lol You 2 are in the same family line as my hubby! Mary and Margie are not twins. Mary was born 22 Jul 1925 and Margie was born 16 Jun 1932. Both are still living here on Long Island. My husband's grandparents did have a set of twin but they were born very early and did not live. Twins ran in the family but so far not in this generation.

I am a bit confused since my hubby's grand father said that Andrews' father's name was Conrad Goess and that he was a Lutheran School Teacher in Langfield, Germany.

I would love to exchange info with the 2 of you.

I'm researching my husband's family and his great grandfather was Andrew Christian Goess through his son Frederick Goess and his father also Fred Goess. My hubby's grandfather said that Andrew had a brother Christian, Wilhelm and Fritz as well as some sisters. They were from Germany and settled in New York. We are still on Long Island. Andrew was married to Margaretta Kirchner in 1889 in New York.

My husband's grand father went to Germany many times to visit family.

Wondering if this is the same branch.

Thanks for the good vibes :)

The picture is the same, but yours seems much clearer. These are pictures of the picture, I'm not sure if we have the "original".

Mae is Edwin's wife, and she still lives up in Maopac, NY. Edwin actually searched out my family when he saw my aunt's name in the local paper awhile ago, and they knew they were related.

My Email is Babsbeast@aol.com and I live @ 3621 Carlisle Road, Wantagh, NY, 11793. Attached is what I currently have of that picture. I will probably be able to get a better copy soon.

By the way, Albert/Albrecht? Goess is supposedly buried in St. John's Cemetery out in Queens, which is close to me. I plan to go visit and see if anyone else is nearby. You never know!
I am so sorry to hear that. My thoughts and prayers are with you. I know it is not an easy time.
It is so ironic that we hook up with family history at this time. It's something we have to do.

Was Mae, Edwin's wife? This is the family that may know alot, as Gail told me, he was the one that did, a few things that I will mail you. They may have alot to share. Like I said before, I love to know what port they came through. Many of those records were destroyed in Germany in WW11.

What is your address. I will try to get that stuff copied tomorrow and send it to you.

As to the picture- I'm not sure we have the same one. Gail had sent me a copy of a pix, yet it is not the same as the one with the names. I will send you that one on the attachment here.

Again, my sincere sympathies go out to you and your family

Diane

I'll call on Wednesday.

Today was a bad/sad one, as we lost my grandfather Frederick, he was 88 yrs old. A pastor from Mae's church was wonderful enough to come and stay with our family as he left us.

I'm really happy that there is so much history to share, it's kind of a comfort in times like this.

Barbara

(
Was the Edwin Goess you mentioned living in Maopac (upstate NY) with a wife named Mae??? If so, I've been told (recently) that he was my granfather's cousin and talked occasionally!

My Grandfather's name is Frederick George Goess, he is actually in that picture sitting on his dad's lap. Frederick's grandfather is the son of Albert Goess, Christian's brother.

I would never have dreamed that we could ever put names to the faces in that picture!!! Unbelievable!!!

I grew up in Brooklyn and Queens, but moved about 12 yrs ago to Wantagh :) My daughter goes to school in Seaford!

I'm on facebook, but I don't have too much there... (I play way too much bejeweled lol) I do have lots of pictures of people, and my uncle is currently scanning loads of my grandfather's photos, so we might have some gems there, you never know!

Can't wait to talk!!!
Barbara

Wed. would be a good day (anytime), as I am off. I get up early.
I was in communication, a few years back. with Gail Snyder. She sent it to me. (Christians daughter Barbaras, daughter)

She had optained it from Edwin Goess who was Christian son Alberts son. It is very cool!

What was your father & moms name.
Are you on facebook. Would love to see pixs if you have any. You can request me (Diane Goess Struthers, if you are). I dabble in it. Just like to see everybodies pix on it.

I grew up in Seaford,& moved to Fl in 1987 with my 1st husband and son Christopher. Last April, I lost my husband Mike, suddenly and w/o warnig to a brain anurysm. We were up in Canada visiting his brother. It has been devastating. No warning.
I work for the Clerk of Courts. My son is married w/ a 2 1/2 yr old (Jack) with one on the way in March!!!! They do not want to know the sex- pisses me off!!!!
I probably will have to go to Staples to copy, as it is large. I have a few interesting other things as well.

How did you come by such wonderful information?

I am just starting to flesh out my tree. All of my information comes from the time after the family settled in the states, so I can't help you go back further, but I can add a whole lot of cousins!!! :)

Unfortunately, I'm doing hostital runs between Long Island and Peekskill right now, but I really would like to compare notes.
Hi Dianne!

There's definetely a match here! My family is decended from Albert's son William.

William Frederick Henry Goess Sr. married Margaret Stoecker, had 5 kids. His son, William Jr. married a Charlotte Pearl Hulsart, and their son Frederick George is my grandfather, who stayed in in Brooklyn to raise his family.

My name is Barbara Mollica. :) I actually figured out the tie to Christian because of a picture my grandfather had of Christian and Regina's 50th wedding celebrathion held in Brooklyn, NY in 1925. Have you seen the picture? I only have a "picture" of this picture taken with a digital camera, not a real scan of the photo, but I am hoping to be able to scan it in the future (I do not have possesion of it).

I am brand new to ancestry, so I'm still trying to figure things out! I'm hoping that we can share info, and if you want, I'll send you the picture if you don't have it already...

Absoulutely!

My name is Diane Goess Struthers. Mine, as well are all from NY. I was born there, but now live in Florida. I'll give you a brief line, and we can see the relation. The surname is unusual, so I'm sure we are !

Albert Goess & Margaret Meison had 3 sons
Christian (1850) William (1853) Andrew (1860)

I decend through Christian. Cristian married Regina Konrad & they had 6 kids, the youngest being my grandfather Otto August.(1890) They came over from Germany in 1890. Otto was actually born here,, but all the others, in Germany.
They settled in Brooklyn

Otto married Barbara Hirsh and they had 5 kids, the youngest being my Dad, John August, yet he always went by Jack.(1930)

Looking forward to your response and sharing info.

Diane

Valerie and Vee,
Since I last posted I have made some discoveries. The name was originally de Goes, became de Goes. Goeas sounds like Goes said phonetically in English. It still hold true about the two brothers who were given land in Madeira by the king for heroic deeds in the battle o Azila. One brother returned to the mainland.I have research this family as far back to about 600's.It has all been done for you.Go to the site Sapo.pt--Genealogy--familia(family) write Goes-there are four names-chose Goes then it is self explanatory.pai=father mae=mother filhos=children.
The name Goess is the name used by Dutch, German, etc.The iniciation of this branch originates with Damiao de Goes, humanitarian, statesman, friend to Erasmus,of noble blood. This name is illustrious from the kings of Visgoths to the kings of Leon, and king of Asturia.to Portugal.

Hi Valerie,
Since we last wrote I have found this much information. If I can recall correctly, two brothers of noble statue were given land in Madeira, after the confrontation in Azila?. One brother remained in Madeira and the other returned to the mainland. This was the beginning of the Goes family on that island. The name is spelled gois or goes. de means only of. There is a city in the northern part of Portugal and another in Netherland with the name Goes.
Alice`
