British Columbia, Canada Godbehere connection to Sheffield
Hello.... I was wondering if anyone could help me on my Godhehere connection to Sheffield, Yorkshire, England. My Great-grandmother was named Sarah Eliza Godbehere. She was born to Andrew Godbehere and Maria (nee') Holdworth. Sarah was born June 19, 1858 at Sheffield. I have no idea of her siblings or genealogy beyond her parents names. She first married to a Mr. Sampson (not related to my surname) and then she remarried to my Great-grandfather: George Hutchinson also of Sheffield.
The four children of Sarah Eliza and George Hutchinson's (including Elizabeth...my grandmother) survived well into adulthood: -Elizabeth Hutchinson....b. March 15, 1898. moved to Salt Spring Island in 1910 with her mother. She married W.H.C. Sampson -Lily (Lillie) Hutchinson...b.?..married to Mr. Bancroft...she moved to South Vancouver, BC. Canada...died on Aug. 20, 1921. -Emma Hutchinson....b.?...became Mrs. Duckworth and moved to Salt Spring island, BC, Canada. Emma died in the early 1960's. -Amelia Hutchinson...Mrs. Mawson....b.?...died near 1968-69. She was 85 years old in 1968....born 1883 aprox. She lived at Scarlet Heights, Queensbury, "Huttersfiled?" (Granny with her Yorkshire accent could never pronounce her "H's" and thus all her words that had an "H" sounded as if they should be and "A"...so Huttersfield would be "Attersfield" and "Hutchinson" was Atchison
Other children of Sarah and George Hutchinson's, who died were: -William Andrew Hutchinson, was killed in the Bessemer Works, Sheffield, January 6, 1902, age 19. -Ivy Hutchinson, died April 29, 1903, age 1 year and 7 months. -Percy Hutchinson, died May 28, 1903, age 10 years. -George Robert Hutchinson, died February 20, 1904, age 24 years. -Harold Hutchinson, died January 14, 1909, age 9 years. -Ernest Hutchinson, interred April 5, 1898, age 16 months (I don't know if he is Sarah and George Hutchinson's son). *All of the above list are buried at Tinsley Park Cemetery...in section A-b. *Granny (Elizabeth) told me that one of her brothers died as a result of an accident at a playground, he was struck in the head by a heavy old metal swing (that must have been Harold as he was closest to Granny's age). She also told me that another brother (must be William) died as a result of burns from hot molten steel.
Emma Duckworth/Hutchinson was the first to come to Canada with her husband. Emma's husband died and her mother (Sarah Eliza Hutchinson/Godbehere) brought my Granny (Elizabeth) with her to help raise Emma's children. My Granny was 10 years old when she arrived at Salt Spring Island, British Columbia, Canada. She arrived here in 1910. Sarah Eliza Hutchinson/Godbehere died on January 7, 1935. My grandmother Elizabeth, died in September of 1985.
Any information would be greatly appreciated... thank you.... Rocky Sampson.

Re: British Columbia, Canada Godbehere connection to Sheffield
Thank you ever sooo much!!!.... I never knew this information and you were so fast. Your kindness is much appreciated. I will be so happy to share the news with my family. My father speaks well of his grandmother Sarah. She had been in a lot of pain in the last part of her life and lived out her days in bed and wheel chair. But dad remembers her kindness and good ways... whenever he or his siblings came to tears from their falls or whatever....Granny Hutchinson (Godbehere) would give them jelly beans from a little velvet sack that hung from her bed post. The cute part about the story is that all my aunts and uncles plus my father tell me... that each of them was the special one...as their Granny would save the black jelly beans just for them! They never talked about this, as it was a secret...(to each other)...She made each feel special, that's what counts. My Granny was the same... she learned from her mother. We have a few pictures of gr-grandfather Hutchinson, Sarah (nee' Godbehere) and my grann's generation... and many stories too. One story I have to share... My grandfather was half Native North American Indian... he and Granny married and when ever her family came to visit over the years...they fully expected Granny and Grandad to be living in a Tee-Pee...with horses and a great open Prarrie. No luck though...they were simple farm folk...with a beautiful old farmhouse on a few hundred acres of fields, forest and orchard, cattle and sheep. Disapointed in there being no wild ponies and buffalo the family would always return though....smiles and all. The Prarrie Indian people live a few thousand miles away...we are on the Pacific Ocean...the West Coast of Canada. It is very different here than on the Prarrie. Take care and thank you again....Rocky Sampson

Re: British Columbia, Canada Godbehere connection to Sheffield
My mothers maiden name was Godbehere. She was born in sheffield, Yorkshire. Most people of that name seem to come from Sheffield and to have worked in the steel industry for which Sheffield was and is famous. Another area in which godbeheres seem to have been in the past is Chipping Camden in Gloucestershire. They all seem to have been very ordinary people hard working. It is an old name and was around before the Conquest.

Re: British Columbia, Canada Godbehere connection to Sheffield
Hi, I have just sent an e-mail to you via Hotmail. My name is Michael Charles Brooke. I was so excited to read your letter, I did not see the history you had posted. We are related, as Amelia Hutchinson/Taylor/Mawson is my Grandmother on my mothers side. The Taylor bit is mine. I have been trying to trace the Taylors and have had hardly any success, Then you have now filled in a lot of info I have had no way of getting. I knew of the Samson's, but did not know who they were. If you reply, I will send you what I have. Mike

Re: British Columbia, Canada Godbehere connection to Sheffield
Hi, You've obviously done some research here! All of these places are within 20 miles of me. Just one thing, the accent you describe isn't a Sheffield one, to translate Hutchison into "Atchison" you would need to be a Londoner, one of the most exaggerated of the southern accents, whereas Sheffield is a strong Northern accent, which would be "Utchison" (the U to sound like the English pronunciation of "Book" North Americans don't seem to have that precise sound) I don't know if that shines any new light on the subject?
Cheers
Rupe
