I am looking for info on Stephen Godbee married to Jane M. Bargeron. They had one son, Charlie Jackson Godbee who is my great grand dad. I would appreciate any info any one has. You can reach me at kathygc@gsaix2.cc.gasou.edu Thanks

Stephen Godbee was the 6th child of James Henry Godbee and Martha Mulkey. He was born 23 February 1814 in Girard, Burke County, Georgia and died 18 October 1886 in Burke County. On 15 April 1845 he married Jane Mary Bargeron in Burke County. She was born 29 July 1823 in Burke Coaunty and died 17 March 1905 in Burke County. They are buried in the Bethany Methodist Church Cemetery, Girard. The had six children: Mary Jane, Bathsheeba J., Hettie Elizabeth, Juella, Charlie Jackson, and Josephine.
My husband's line is with Stephen's brother, Mulkey Godbee who married Caroline Royal.

Do you know if he had a sister or cousin by the name of Nancy Godbee who married Needham Quick. They resided in NC/SC. The family insists that Nancy was from Burke County but if Nancy was in GA (they were married by 1830 and in Marlboro Co. SC) I puzzle over how/where they met. Unless the Godbee parents were still living in NC at the time they met. I know that Needham's chilren came to Burke County and definitely married into the Godbee/Royal/Heath lines there. But even the Godbee records that I've seen have Caroline and Mulkey as parents to Nancy but the dates are screwy and impossible. Thanks.

I have 3 Nancy Godbee's in my research. One b 1831 in Burke Co., Georgia and is the child of Mulkey Godbee and Caroline Royal. The 2nd was born abt 1822 in Burke Co., Georgia and is the daughter of Albert Godbee and Elizabeth Griffin. The 3rd was born abt 1825 in Burke Co., Georgia and is the daughter of Stephen Godbee and Margaret Prescott.

Do you have any information on Stephen's wife? I have Stephen's grandfather, William Godbee, also marrying a Bargeron. Her name was Mary though I have no other information on her. I have been able to find that the Bargerons of Burke county may have originated with an Elisha Bargeron settling there in 1784 after the Revolution. I just am not sure how and if the two families connect. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Other than Cameron, which of Needham's children went to Burke County? Please give source.

It is what I have been saying for a long time; Needham's Nancy was not a Godbee. Or at least no one has provided sources of evidence to prove.

Hi, Butch! I can't authenticate either. BUT, from my DNA showing connections, I know we are kin to Godbees going way back on both the Quick and Royal sides. Of course, Cameron's wife Dath (Ladaskey) Heath was a Godbee on her mom's side, but she was from Burke County. My info indicated that Nancy was kin to her but dates are screwy on the info I received. Nancy was believed to be a Stephen Godbee's daughter, as I recall . There was more than one generation of Stephen Godbee names. And a Stephen was in North Carolina before Burke County... If you follow the Burke county line back they go back to North Carolina (Salmon Creek, I think I recall ). Wade Godbee and his brother are showing up in nearby censuses with the Quicks in NC. Grandmother and Granddaddy Quick (Irene and Robert of Burke County) always said my mother and father were double cousins going way back further than Dath Heath. The Royals (my mother) and the Godbees go all the way back to Virginia in the 1600s. Follow the lines back for Samuel Royal and Thomas Godbee....... I think Nancy had relatives that were in Burke county. When I looked at names of her brothers( children of Stephen) , that is, and then the names of Needham's and Nancy's kids I found repeats. Not proof, of course.... Willard Godbee of Burke county did a lot of research on the Quicks, Royals, and of course Godbee lines. He stated he thought there were some errors in it. His work is accessible in the Burke County Library. There are some confusing dates in it but I think he thought Nancy was a Godbee, too.
Something that has bugged me a long time is that name Heathcock in the 1840 or 1850 census that shows up within Needham's household. I wondered if that was a child just visiting them or where the Heathcock name was coming from. I noticed in previous census years there were Heathcock neighbors. I thought maybe my family was wrong and Nancy maybe was a Heathcock. I haven't seen any proof of that, either. Was just a thought... I read about understanding censuses. During those years, if a neighbor was visiting, the census taker was to record the neighbor as part of the household. I think he was not a Quick, however. Did 23 and me AND Ancestry .com DNA. Definitely cousins with Jacobs some generations back. Cenna Jacobs married to Quillar Quick??? Hmmm.... I have to look at and understand a lot more yet on the DNA and placing it in Geo Match..... Of course, you and I are second cousins per both research web sites... Wish I could authenticate Nancy. I found a James Quick in 1793 in Greensboro, Green County, Ga., owning property next to a Middleton. Records of him paying taxes. Then... no more info, he just disappears. There was an Indian massacre in the area about that time. Did he get killed or just leave? Could there had been a James Quick who left a child in NC/SC and migrated to Ga? Why did Cameron come to Ga unless he had ties. He was here before the Civil war when he married Dath. Why Burke County. I think there had to be some ties. Sam Royal vouched for him when Cameron went AWOL to go home to see his mother in SC and was gone too long... I think the Quicks, in addition to the Godbees and Royals, knew each other back up in SC/NC. Wish I could prove one way or another.....
That's more than you asked, I know.....

Mr. Willard Godbee of Burke County, Ga left his research on the Godbees and related families in Burke County Ga. Waynesboro library available to review upon request. I think your answers are there.

As far as I know, only Cameron. Found Atlas, first born in North Carolina. Check your censuses. And have come across others (not Heathcock name) but not in Ga...
