Hi Denise,
I just read your message regarding the Goda family from Slovakia and Ohio. My great grandmother was Maria Goda and was born in Secovska Polianka, Zemplin, Slovakia. When my grandmother and father immigrated to the U.S., there were Goda relatives in the Youngstown area. Is this where your family is from? If so, I would be interested in sharing information since we may be related.
Thanks, Peggy

Hi. I just read your message on the Goda family born in Slovakia. My husband's family was born in Slovakia and immigrated to the US about 1900. They first settled in OH before moving onto Indiana. I have found John Goda, b. 1857 in Slovakia, m. to Mary Popovich, b. 1869 in Slovokia. He came to the US in 1893 according to the 1900 census. In 1900 he and Mary were in PA. They were married after coming to the US. His brother, Mike, b. 1854 in Slovakia is living with him.

What's confusing is that their son, John, b. 1892 was supposedly born in OH. So not sure where they settled when they first arrived in the US. OH or PA.

By 1920 they were in IN.

Any of this info fit with yours?

Hi Linda,
Thanks for your reply to my message. From the info you mentioned, we may have a connection. Do you happen to know where in Slovakia your Godas originated? My line came from Secovska Polianka, Zemplin County. There were Godas from our line that lived in the Youngstown, Ohio area in the 1930s. It was a John and Mary. This couple had a son, Joseph. John was a sibling to my great-grandmother. The names you mentioned fit with her family but the dates are slightly off. I will check the 1930 census where I found the John, Mary, and Joseph Goda. Maybe we'll be able to find the connection!
Thanks, Peggy

Peggy,

Hi, I don't know what part of Slovakia they came from. John Goda's death certificate says he was born in Austria. My father-in-law says it was Slovakia.I know that John, b. 1860 had a brother born in 1854 in Slovakia. They both came to the US about the same time. I have a feeling that there were other brothers too.

The names of John and Mary seem to run through out the family. My John and Mary were in IN by 1920. John died in 1925 and Mary was remarried and living in Terre Haute, IN in 1930. Mary's maiden name was Popovich.

I hope we can connect somehow.

Linda

Hi Linda,
Looks like we don't have a connection yet. If somehow you can learn what village they are from in Slovakia, I'm sure we'll find it. We just need to go further back, especially since these names keep running in the family and they both lived in Ohio. Did you state where they lived in Ohio? Keep digging and good luck!
Peggy

Surnames: Goda, Vanuch, Newman
Hello Denise,

My name is Sarah Newman. I have recently begun to look into my ancestry on my dad's side and I came across your post from 2001. From the little bit of information I have, it looks like there is some common ancestry.

I'm not sure that I have anything that would be of use to you, but maybe you have something for me!

Here's the basics:

My father was born in Glendale in 1954. His parents are George Newman and Joan Goda.

Joan was born 11 Aug 1933 in Los Angeles, CA.

Her parents were John Goda and and her mother's last name was Vanuch.

John Goda was born 4 May 1908 in Lakewood, Cuyahoga, Ohio.

His parents were Mike Goda of Parno, Hungary and Frances Anna Sopka from Josomincent, Hungary.

If any of this sounds familiar, I would love to exchange emails and see if we have any missing pieces that the other can fill in.

If this does not match with what you have, then it was lovely to meet you and I wish you the best of luck in your search.

Sarah
