Adam's County Gochenauers
Very interested in finding info on Joseph F. Gochenauer born 1887. Married to a Dora M Showers. Born 1889. Joseph and Dora had a son Leroy. I am trying to locate Joseph's side of the family. His father and grandfather might be related to the Gochenauer's in Chambersburg and Shippensburg, Pa. I believe Harvey Gochenauer maybe Joseph's brother.

Re: Adam's County Gochenauers
My Grandfather was Harvey Gochenauer of Flora Dale, about 3 miles north of Biglerville, Adams County, Pa. He was in his late seventies when he died in 1969. As a child I recall hearing of an "Uncle Joe" but never met him. We are related to a Joseph Gochenauer who served as a Union Officer. He was born in Shippensburg, Pa. He became a physician and moved to the southwest following the Civil War. He eventually settled in San Diego, Calif. where he became one of the stalwarts of the community enegaging in many public works projects such as the construction of the city public rail system.

Re: Adam's County Gochenauers
Very anxious to get your reply. I believe the Uncle Joe you might be referring to could be Harvey's brother Joseph Franklin Gochenauer. And the Joseph you are talking about from Shippensburg, Pa. is my husband's ggreat uncle. His name was not Joseph but David. He was born 1841 in Shbg. and died in 1917 in San Diego, Ca. he was a physcian and served in 202Pa. Regt. Co. G. He was married to a Mary Lucinda Grove from Adams County, Pa. David did have a brother Joseph born 1838 and died 1866. He was married to a Rachel. How are you related to these Gochenauers. I have been trying for a long time to make this connection.

Re: Adam's County Gochenauers
My name is Stanley Russell Gochenour, Jr. My father, Stanley, Sr was the youngest child of Harvey Gochenauer. You are correct about David Gochenauer. I was not completely awake when I made the reply. We have some photos of David and his hospital in California that depicts dirt streets and horse carriages out front.
There are photos of the tombstones of Harvey, Joseph and Leroy on line at the Wenksville Cemetary website.
Stanley, Sr. and my mother had 6 children, 3 boys and 3 girls. I am the oldest.
Harvey and Edith Starner Gochenauer had 6 children, John, Clair, Warren, Stanley, Mable and Bernice. All are deceased. All but Mable lived out their lives in Adams County. Mable lived her adult life in Hanover, Pa. which is southwestern York County. Hanover Boro limits are at the Adams County border.
What else can I tell you?

Re: Adam's County Gochenauers
My great grandfather's name was Joe Gochenauer. His son Leroy, also known as Tom, was my dad's father. I don't know of any relationship with any family in Chambersburg. No one spoke of them, nor did we visit. However, with a name like Gochenauer, there must be some relationship. I am just starting my ancestor search and have not gotten back any farther than Grandpa Joe. It's very possible Harvey and Joe were brothers, but I'm not sure. Iwill be digging into this.

Re: Adam's County Gochenauers
Hey, Skip, This is Elaine Gochenauer. Why can't you spell your name right? I am just starting on my ancestor search, and your answer to this lady has given me some help. I just retired from teaching and now have time for this. I wish I had asked more questions when I was younger. I would love to compare notes on family history. I have found the graves of every one of my Grandma Gochenauer's line (Shepard, McCauslin, Fehl) in the local cemetaries, all the way back to the first immigrant frm Germany. I'm hoping to do the same with the Gochenauer's. Say hello to Peggy. Best regards, Elaine
