I have Gochee relatives who lived in Monroe NH/Barnet VT from about 1870 on. It's a long shot, but Thomas Gochee, who lived there, had a child born about 1854, named Hemile/Emile. The 1855 NY census says it was a boy, but
may be mistaken. I have some indication that this child was
left in Canada, but it's possible he/she came with Thomas
to VT/NH. The age is a match. The 1900 census say's Emily's father was from Canada, but says she and her mother were born in NH. This is not conclusive, though... there is an almost diabolical tendency for the census records to be misleading for these Gochee's Their name in the census is listed as Gauthier, Larouche, Gouthier, Gothier, Gochee, Laroch, Gochea, etc. The name on the gravestone in Monroe NH is Gautier. I quite recently discovered that another daughter, Mathilda, who I thought was missing had actually come with them and was married to someone on Barnet, so in a way, this would be deja vu. She is also listed as born somewhere other than where she was born.

Do you have any additioanl details about Emily? I have the 1900 census, which listed Moses Laundry, Emily, and three children John (and his wife Bessie), Peter, and Moses. The census indicated they (Moses & Emily) were married about 1868, which is right about when Thomas arrived in the area. If this Emily is Thomas' daughter, I have her complete ancestry back to the 1600's.

Hi Julie,

I have just been reading your message of 13 feb 2000 (BTW,my birthday) and others in reply. I add all variants of the Gauthier patronym to our database as, like the Gochees, all are part of Gauthier descendencies.

Does the book you have give any clues as to Joseph's parents or place of origin in Québec?
