My grandmother was a Gocek. Her name was Ethel Gocek and her father and mother were John Andrew and Zophia Szczepkvic Gocek. Her parents immigrated from Galacia, Austria Poland. John's father's name was Mordecai Gocek and I think his wife's name was Sophie Marsh. They lived in Pennsylvania and later moved to Archer, Florida which is West of Gainesville, Florida. Mordecai went missing in 1916 after his wife went back to Pennsylvania due to the fact that she did not like living in Florida. My great aunt said he was heartbroken that she would not stay. Rumor is he drowned in the local lake. There are articles in The Daily Sun dated March 3 and March 8th, 1916 reporting the disappearance My grandmother's siblings were Edward Gocek, Johnny Gocek, Elayne Gocek, Dorothea Gocek, Kathryn Gocek, Anne Gocek, Helen, Frank, Walter, Jessie, Helen (who died at birth) and Katy (who died at birth). So there were 13 children born to John and Zophia Gocek. To the person who had a relative in Alachua, Florida we are probably related. Although there is an Alachua, Florida town. Archer is in the County of Alachua. I am having problems finding where Mordecai immigrated to the United States. I have been told that Gocek was shortened from the original polish spelling. If anyone has the original spelling I would love to find this out.
