Mary

Would you recognize a photo of Frances Gocek if I emailed one to you? I have her 1st communion photo and also a snapshot of her at about 16 yrs. I think. I may also have others but not sure off the top of my head. She was obviously close to my great grandparents' family (John and Mary Wisniewski-Moniak) since we have the 1st communion photo. Maybe they were her godparents.

Do the surnames Muniak, Moniak, Dziedzic, Barilka, or Buslawsky ring any bells?

Thanks.

Trina

I am going to visit my parents next week. I will ask my dad if any of the names are familiar to him. If you want to email me the picture you can send it to mshort62@hotmail.com . My sister has also done extensive research and I will ask her. Do you know about what year Frances was born? Was she born in PA or did she immigrate? Feel free to contact me directly anytime. Mary

Hello Mary

I can't remember last time we corresponded but I now have the following information regarding the Gocek family related to me...

Stanley and Kathryn Gocek had 3 children known, Louis, Albert or Robert and Frances. Children were all born in PA. They lived in Blakely, Lackawanna County, PA. Stanley was deceased as of 1930. This Stanley I believe is a brother to Antonia Gocek-Dziedzic (she lived in Throap, Lackawanna County, PA).

If you know of any of these people, please let me know. Thanks!

Hi,

With Czaszyn being such a small place, maybe you've heard about my family the Kaczmareks, who came from that vicinity and nearby Brzozowiec. They were Ruthenians and belonged to ghe Greek Orthodox Church.

My great great grandfather was named Lucasz Kaczmarek, whose wife Tekla moved down to Medzilaborce (now in Slovakia). Lucasz and Tekla's two daughters, my great grandmother, Fevronia (Veronica) and Marta (Martha) came to Philadelphia around 1903 and both died in Pa.

Cheers!

I just came across this and I am SO glad I did. I am very confused!!

This is what I have and maybe you can understand my confusion or even better, help me figure this mess out!

I have a death certificate for a Frank Kielbasa (aka Kolbash) who resided in Fayette county, PA. He immigrated from Lopuszna. On his death certificate, his mother's maiden name is listed as Marania Kolot and his father is John Kielbasa.

I've been trying to figure out if this Frank is any how related to my Josephine (Kielbasa) Rusin. The info I have from her Death Certificate says her mother's maiden name is Mary Behm. And her father is listed as John Kielbasa.

Now, on to the confusing part. Just today, I found a listing on the Polish Genealogical Society of America website from the birth index for the St. John Cantius church. I was searching for my RUSIN family as there were family rumors that a few children were born in Chicago despite all census records indicating they were all born in PA. On this listing, I find three children. Two of them were known children, a third apparently died about 6 months old. For the first child listed born in 1902 (which was not Josephine's first child), the maiden name of GACEK was used. However, for her first child (who was born in PA in 1901) and her other children (born 1903-1918) the maiden name used was Kielbasa.

So, now there is a commonality between what you posted and the Gocek / Kolot.

It makes me think that maybe there was a marriage/remarriage with the parents and that's why I am seeing a Gacek name on an entry for her and her possible brother is showing a Kolot name.

Clear as mud?

Another interesting observation. Frank Kielbasa (mentioned above) who listed his mother as Marania KOLOT, married a Rozalia (aka Rosella) Woznicka. Rozalia also came from Lopuszna. I found the ship's manifest from her trip to the US and as the point of contact of the nearest relative still living in the place she came from is listed as Ignacz GORCEK of Lopuszna.

A lot of similarities....

There is one thing you have to remember. Mistakes are made. Most are due to the fact that many of the people providing the information were translating from Polish to English and may not have understood the question. Many didn't read or write Polish so they wouldn't notice if someone wrote down the wrong information. Most of the information for birth certificates was given by the mid-wife, who may have been filling out more than one form. I have one Church record where the mother's maiden name it actually the grandmother's maiden surname. My Mother-in-Laws Baptismal Certificate says her father is Daniel, even though we know it was Valenty. She's the only one with that name. Her birth certificate is correct. Many times the spelling was changed because someone spelled the name like it sounded to them.

I sent a message yesterday 3/15/12. I do not see where it posted. My grandmother, Ethel Gocek Arnette was born in Penn. to a John Andrew Gocek and Zophia Gocek. They later moved to Archer, Florida which is in Alachua County. She had 13 brothers and sisters of which 3 are still living. Two are in Gainesville and one is in Pennsylvania (I think). John Andrew has the same birthday as you listed except for the year of birth. (It it within a year or two of your date). John's father, Mordecai Gocek, also moved to Archer along with his wife, which I think her name was Sophie. Still checking that one. Sophie didn't like Florida and returned to Pennsylvania. Mordecai went missing in March of 1916 and was never located. Mordecai, Sophie, John and Zophia immigrated from Galacia Austria Poland. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.
