Hi Dawn

I hope you saw my reply to your query in November about Royston's family. I believe his great-great-grandfather was James Gobbett of London Street, who was buried at St Mary Magdalen, Bermondsey, on 27 March 1831, aged "31". James was presumably born on 24 January 1799 and baptized at that church on 12 May 1799, a son of Thomas and Sarah. Have you found their marriage or burials? I'd be very interested to learn how they are connected to William Gobbett (c.1612-1692?) as I'm also researching the Gobbett families of Earl Soham and other places in East Anglia.

Dear David, I will look for info for you . You asked me once before if I have any records of my parents marriage . I have been unable to find any neither has my brother , Bruce Martin Gobbett . Their names are Thomas James Gobbett & Violet Ethel Martin . We know that they came out to Australia on the S.S. Stratheden . I have a list of the passengers & they are registered as Mr.T.J & Mrs. V.E. Gobbett . I have had searches done to no avail. They told us that they were married on board ship . But we think that can not be so & can not find any records here , Do you have any notions or anybody else ?
Regards Dawn Morris .

Thanks Dawn

There seems to be no record of your parents' wedding in England or Wales, and I don't think it would have been legally valid on a British or Australian ship. Perhaps it was prevented by a previous marriage, if your father was the Thomas J. Gobbett who married Elsie D. Talbot in the Cambridge district in 1923. I wrote to their son Donald J. Gobbett (1924-2010) a few years ago, asking about his ancestry, but never received a response. I believe Don had a sister, Mrs Pearl Anita Selin (b. Lambeth 1932; d. Cambridge 1989).

Their mother may have reverted to her maiden name and married William G. Lanham-Davies in 1954. That marriage was also registered in the Cambridge district, as were the deaths of Elsie D. Lanham-Davies (c.1906-1962) and William Glynne L. Davies (1894-c.1972). If Elsie was born in Cambridge in 1905, her middle name was Doris and she was probably enumerated there with the Needham family in 1911.

I hope these possibilities will give you some leads to follow up.

Best of luck
David
