Is there anyone that has information on Johannes Gnehm, or Salina Gnehm (Obrist was her maiden name. They both came from Switzerland. Also, the Pedersens from Aarhus, Denmark? Any information would be appreciated. Thank you, Karen Blanton

I hope someone is still interested in this thread! I am excited here hat I may have finally found my grandparents??? I have the following info: Thora Neilsen immigrated to the states into the New Jersey/New York area. She had a cousin who was Louisa Olsen, who came from Norway also, I think with her (?).Thora married a Peder Pedersen. Louisa never married. I don't know if Thora was married in Norway, or when she got here, but all children were born here. They had five children. A boy died young, Karsten. I have two old pictures of three of the children. Here it gets weird. One picture is of Peder,(born 1929) Carol, (no birthday) and Janney (born 1920). There was apparently another sister, Irene, the oldest, not in pic. Then, in the second picture which appears to be the same children, it identifies them as Yanney, Karsten and Hjordes. Hjordes looks like "Carol" so I am wondering if she just used a more "American nickname?"
I think the family came from Lista, Norway.
Of the children, Janny married a Philip Voegelin, Carol married a Joseph Bodnar, Irene married Raymond Moran, and Peder married Ethel Menke. I am trying to verify the correct Thora and Peder, so I can go back from there. I can't find them in census marriage or any other records. I can find anything remotely looking like it fits. Your Thora and Peder sound interesting. Have you found any more info on them?
The only other clue is I remember as a young child visiting some relatives in Vermont, large farm, with dairy cows, Bennington area I think. The Tullisens, Tollisen's. I remember a very dear "Tante Maria" that I adored. and I don't recall her husband's name. I think Maria was Thora's sister(?) I've got quite a puzzle here.
Thanks ya all!

Do you know where Thora Gnehm Pedersen died? My Thora would have died in New York, possibly in Bayshore, but also Rockville Center? I am not sure which child she was living with at the time. The 1971 timetrame sounds about right.
I don't think Thora worked at all in the states. Her English was never very good, and my recollection is that she always lived with either her daughter, Carol Pedersen Bodnar, or her son, Peder Pedersen. Earlier than that, she must have been with or near relatives so that she got by speaking Norwegian. She lived with us for a brief time when I was quite little. She spoke poor English then. (60's)
I have no memory of my grandfather at all, so he must have died early.
There is a VERY VERY slight possibility that Thora may have married a John Hershel very late in life, and he died soon after. He was with her when she lived with us in Florida, and he died there. THAT is a long story. My mom may have arranged that... The marriage... not the death! ;)
So Thora could get John's pension maybe??? This is pure conjecture. John was German, and I am not sure he and Thora even understood each other very well.

Thora married in the states. She arrived April 1911 on the Oscar II. She was single, Thora Tollisen, 18, from Farsmid or Farsund(?) Vanse. Her mother was Kanne Tollison from Vanse. There was a Peder Pedersen,46, on the same boat, with his daughter Karoline 17. I wonder if Thora traveled with them to meet and marry his son. There were Andersens and Olsens on the boat also, which are intertwined with my family, but I just need to figure it all out.

To Nordic Girl, my name is Karen, I received a notice from Ancestry.com saying there was information on Thora. The Thora you mention is not the one I have been looking for. She is my grandmother. Her maiden name was Pedersen then Gnehm. Since my last message I have found the info I was looking for. Thank you for your help. Karen
