Hello Kimberly,

Here's a quick Gnann history to get you started on your
family research:

The first two Gnann's to the USA arrived in Savanna, GA in 1750
on the sailing vessel "Antelope". George Gnann along
with with wife, Anna, and brother, Jacob, then settled
nearby in Ebenezer, GA. Most of the Gnann's in the USA
are descended from these two brothers. There is another group
of Gnann's living in NY, near Buffalo, but I beleive they are
a "second wave" to arrive, but do not know when yet.

George and Jacob came from a small town in Germany, called Langenau,
just north of the city of ULM. I have a large family tree I am
building that traces most Gnann's to this town all the way back to "Konlin Gnann"
in the year 1515. I have also found a mention of a "Lafger Gnanno" in 1095 in Ebersberg, Bavaria.

The name Gnann (also Gnanno, Gnanne, Knan...) means "Namesake" or "Related One" in the old
south-Germanic (Schwabian) language.

If you would like a copy of the Family Tree in an Excel file, feel free
to send me your e-mail address.

I can be e-mailed at: mike@gnanners.com

Hope this helps and good luck in your family research.

Michael,

I live in Mississippi - apparently my great-great grandfather moved to Mississippi from Georgia and settled in the central part of the state in a small community called Conway, Mississippi. Do you have any of this information included in your family tree? I am interested in tracing as far back as possible also.

Good luck and hope to hear from you soon!
Cynthia

Hello Cynthia,

I checked the family tree file and I do have
a couple of Ganann's in it. Sorry, but haven't
done much more research yet into that spelling.

George Marion Gnann (1833 to 1892)(who later
changed to Ganann)and two of his son's:
Joseph Henry Ganann (born 1875)and
George Mickelburg Ganann (1881 to 1952).

...and their/our ancestors all the way back to 1515.

Hopefully these are the folks you're looking
for.

This family page doesn't let me see your email address,
so if you would like to receive the whole file,
feel free to email me at mike@gnanners.com
and leave your email address so I can send this
out to you.

PS: So, when are you going to change back to
the proper way of "Gnann" and get this
wayward part of the family back in
line! Ha Ha! :-)

I would like to ask if you have any genealogical information concerning Miss Georgia J. Gnann who married Charles G. Cotton on 26 May 1859 in Savannah (Chatham County), Georgia. I am searching for the site and date of the first marriage of my great, great-grandmother, Clarissa (Clarkie) Rice Cotton-Smith-Davis who was born in the Old Barnwell District of South Carolina in 1812. She was the mother of Charles G. Cotton who married Miss Georgia Gnann. I was born in Savannah. I cannot locate the first marriage of Clarkie Rice to ....... ...... Cotton to ascertain her maiden name. I thought that perhaps I could learn some information through Gnann Family records. Due to wars burning down courthouses between the American Revolutionary War and the Civil War, I have been at a stand-still for many years. I am new to using the message board. I am aware that the Gnann Family has connections to Ebenezer/Springfield, GA, and members of my family lived there during the Civil War.
If you can shed any information about the Gnann-Cotton marriage and Charles G. Cotton, I would greatly appreciate it.Thank you.

Hello all,

I do some writing for my kids and I'm currently researching family history to try to see if I can find out when the name change from Gnann to Ganann occurred, when we got off the boat, when they migrated to MS, etc......yes...we are still the wayward ones, apparently!!

Mike Gnann referenced a file that contained some extensive records. His email is no longer active.....if anyone else has a genealogy archive file and if you could forward to me at the email below, I'd sure appreciate it...

I'm considering a trip over to Effingham county at some point...I hear there's some good family history over there.

Thanks
