I am interested in any information regarding the Gnam family. My grandfather was Michael Charles Gnam born in 1877 and my great grandfather's name was Emile Gnam.

Emile had a sister....Josephine who married Martin Knesel (Knoesel) in 1869 and started the Knesel family in New Orleans.

Thank you for your response. I would like to know more about the family if you don't mind sharing. My Aunt MaryLou Gnam knows very little about the Gnam family. My father Gordon Gnam passed away when I was in high school. I am happy to know about Josephine. Are there any more children that you know about from that generation. Do you know the cemetery Emile or Josephine are buried in in N O?
Again thank you!

Hi - I have found out a few things you might be interested in....Josephine married Martin Knesel (Knoesel) in 1869....in 1870 Frederick was born; in 1872 twins Charles Emile (named after her brother?) and George Martin (Peter), in 1875 George Albert, in 1878 Louis Herman, in 1880 Josephine (who died at one month of pneumonia), in 1883 Josephine Amelia, in 1886 Ernest Martin and in 1888 Mathilda Rose. Martin Peter was my grandfather....he worked for Hausmann's for over 70 years. Martin and Josephine (as well as Mathilda Rose) are buried in the St. Vincent de Paul Cemetery No. 1, Quarter C, Fifth Section, Fifith [sic] Alley - 3rd Teir, Vault No. 60. I don't know much about Gnam family....Emile was a boilermaker. Josephine died in 1931, Martin 1918 - they are the foundation of the Knesel family in New Orleans. Please share other information you have if at all possible.

Thanks again for the information. I have the following information: Charles Gaspard Gnam and Clara Jeck are the first of the Gnam family that I can identify. Their children were Charles Emile (1851-1917), Marie Virginie (1856-1857), Apollonia Josephine (1848- ). Emile Gnam (Charles) married Mary Cannon and their children included:Emile Jr (1877-1910) and Charles Michael (1880-1946) Charles was my grandfather. He moved to Mansfield, and married my grandmother Emma Clara Barrett. My Father was Gordon Gnam and his sister is Mary Lou Gnam. My father died at the age of 46 of a heart attack. My aunt just moved to be near my family in Ohio. For a time we lived in Virginia and Iowa. There were Gnams in both states particularly Iowa. I never met any of them and often wondered if some of the family may have moved to Iowa. Also I have wondered about country of origin for the Gnam family. I know Mary Cannon was from Ireland but do not know where Emile originated. Keep me posted on anything you find.

Clara James Gnam (Clara Jeck) died 7/18/1902 in New Orleans at 68 years old. btw - how is the name "Gnam" pronounced? Thanks.
|
How did Clara Jeck Gnam become Clara James? I was a little confused by the name change when I was searching for Gnam info.
Gnam is pronounced Nam. Like Viet Nam. The G is silent. I had an awful time with the name when I was younger. No one could pronounce it Often people would turn the n into an r.

Interesting thread......it has given me a lead (Charles Gaspard Gnam and Clara Jeck). Can you direct me to sources for these two?
My Great Grandmother was Clara Gnam, who appears to be the youngest surviving daughter of Emile Gnam and Mary (Cannon?). Clara married a Morel, whose first name I cannot find, and had my maternal grandfather Andrew and another son Alexander. My grandfather Andrew grew up in the 9th ward of New Orleans.

Thanks for the information. It fills in some blanks for me. I have only searched the USGEN site for Louisiana/New Orleans. A lot of my information has come from my Aunt (a Gnam)who knew the names of Emile and Mary Cannon Gnam (her grandparents. I was hoping to find information regarding the country of origin for the Gnam family. My aunt seems to think it was the Alsaice Lorraine area.
