Hello Gwen: Thanks for the messages. I was also born (1945) and raised in Buffalo. I have been living in Virginia for 30 years, but all my family still live in WNY.

The letter from me must be the info I sent to Christine O'Neill in Lancaster. My primary interest is in trying to find any info, legends, documents etc. which might help me trace Simon's roots back to Poland. It would be great if your father has such info or recollections.
Sometime around 1980 one of my nephews visited several of Simon's daughters in Lancaster (my aunts, your great aunts) and wrote down some of their recollections. They said Simon and his wife, Agnes Szymanski, immigrated to Buffalo around 1879 and named their villages in Poland. I visited both villages two years ago and found no new info and no trace of Gmereks. In fact, it has been a bit frustrating trying to do Gmerek genealogy. I can't find any info on the Internet nor any Gmerek who has any interesting info as yet. But I do know the names of Simon's parents (your gggrandparents).
I am not particularly interested in the feuding that occured among my father and his siblings. However, please contact me directly at gmerekgemerek @ yahoo.com and I will tell you what little I recall on it.
Also, you said the Snyder name is a plague. Who is Snyder?
Concerning the farm on the corner of Harlow and Seven Day Roads in Darien Center, I have been there many times in recent years. It is unfortunate that the current owners appear to be destroying the original farmhouse. Also, Aunt Louise helped me draw a sketch of the original buildings shortly before she died.
In any event, I would love to hear any info your father has about Simon or Agnes and our roots in Poland (It was Prussia when they left). Does he know if they came in through NY harbor? The ship's name? Does he recall hearing any stories about their lives in Poland?

I look forward to hearing from you

Hi Gwen or Allyn,
I happend to Google my grandmother's name and I found your reply from 4 years ago. My Grandmother was Clara Gmerek Laubacher. Just wondering how you are related to Clara. Don't know if this will even reach you since it's been so long since this was posted.....Looking forward to your reply!

Sandee: Nice to hear from you. Clara was my aunt. My father, Stanley Gemerek, was her brother. Since 1984 I have done some research into Gmerek genealogy (the extra "e" was added to my surname by my father around 1918). It is my understanding that my grandmother, Agnes, spent the last 6 months of her life living with Clara in Lancaster, NY. Do you know if there are any items in your family that might provide some family history info? Do you know about the shawl that was brought over from Prussian Poland in 1879 and is said to have been left with Clara?

Hi Allyn,
Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. I got some hand written information that Aunt Louise (Your father's and my gram's youngest sister) put together a long time ago. Like I said it's hand written and it would take me to long to retype right now. It's about Simon and Agnes and there's a copy of an old photograph as well. You may already have this, but I'll send it to you anyways. Can you give me your address? My father also said if you would like to call him, maybe he could give you some info. My dad is Jim Laubacher, Clara and Sylvester's son. He lives across the street from the farm on Erie St. That's where I grew up - actually I only moved out 3 years ago...I had it too good! So his number is 716-684-1731. If you're going to call, I'd do it rather soon before planting season hits, then he'll be in the garden alot and will be harder to catch. He's retired, so you can call anytime. Again, if you want to send me your address, I will send you a copy of what Aunt Louise wrote up. If not, it may be a while before I can get it all typed in and sent to you. I remember a few of my grams siblings, Unlce Louie, Aunt Janette (Clara's Twin), Aunt Ann, Aunt Ceil and Aunt Louise, but my father knows a whole bunch more of couse......... Hope you had a nice Easter!

Sandee,

I've been researching my grandmother's family history over the last couple of years off and on. I decided on a whim to check back at this message board today and saw your message from a few months ago. My great-grandmother was Mary Gmerek Jakubiak, the oldest daughter of Simon and Agnes Gmerek. I have managed to put together a pretty extensive family tree with information that we found after my grandmother, Clara, died and with info that Allyn Gmerek sent to me, as well as research I've done on the web (death indexes, census records, etc.). Of course, there are still holes... so the research continues!

I would love to share with you what I have found, as well as learn more about the family from what you have gathered.
