I don't know if the Gmerek's in the St Louis, Missouri are related to the Gmereks in Buffalo. I did See the name of Szymon Gmerek quite often during my searches. A lot of the names you listed coincide with names of my relatives but I have not been able to connect it. If you have any information to share with me, I will gladly share what I have. I am at ritamclain@charter.net

The information you have on Valentine Gmerek is perfectly correct. His Birthdate year is 1873. Gudiswitz is the spelling that the family seem to agree on. If you go to Missouri Death Certificates and just enter Gud, then hit the starts with button, you will get quite a few death certificates from that. Give it a try.

Searching in the archives in town Poznań (Posen)to know, I came across some information on your great-grandparents married Simon Gmerek & Agnes Szymańska. According to these documents were married in 1879 in Parafii Katolickiej in the village Środa, Agnes was 16 years old, and Simon 26 years. Register books of this entry can be found in "Archiwum Archidiecezjalne w Poznaniu." Address of the page you will find on the internet. Try to: http://bindweed.man.poznan.pl/posen/
- but only in polish language.
I think there is a marriage certificate Gmerek Rosalia and Joseph Powiński , from the year 1878, in Parafia Katolicka in the village Czerlejno. She was 20 years old, and he was 25 years.
Besides verb "gmerać" means rummage, but "gmerek" is a noun and it was sign or seal meant belonging to the family. It was a kind of signature. Was placed on graves, objects and documents. Gmerek mark as a signature on the documents can be found in the sixteenth century. I'm from Polish so I know this for sure.
I am not registered on this site permanently. If you need any help you can contact me at: jjnowicka@poczta.onet.pl.
My great-grandfather was Valentine Gmerek from Kołaczkowo, His wife was Helena (Stasiak).

Thanks for the interesting information. I will write to you directly. I seems Simon's 3 or 4 brothers followed him to the USA 1979 and after. He had a brother named Valentine. I will check my records to see if I can find Valentine's wife's name. Family legend says Simon (Szymon)came from a village named Siekierki and his wife Agnes from Czelin. Both villages are along the Oder River in modern Poland. I could find no trace of them when I went there in 1996.

Sorry. I wrote the last message too fast without proofing. I meant to say Simon's brothers followed him after 1879.
