Wonderful information you gave - thanks!! I've seen Glymphville on the map and my dad says Lemuel Glymph is buried on private property off New Hope Road in Pomaria, SC
I wonder if that's the Eargle-Sligh cemetery you mentioned - do you know where the Eargle Sligh Cemetery is??? we'd love to know - we have a map of the area.

Great to know John Glymph's middle name - that's interesting. I have John Abraham Glymph and Catherine Lowe as his parents - can you add info to that - don't know anything about Catherine.

Do you know anything about the Rickards - Elizabeth Rickard had a brother named Daniel I think who was mentally handicapped from what I've read and I think her father is John Rickard - can you add anything to that.

Yes - Sara D. Glymph is the one in our Bible pages who married Emanuel Samuel Sligh the son of John T. Sligh and Elma Hogg the daughter of Zachariah Hogg (same clan as the Hogg -governor of Texas)

my email address is elrodsly@aol.com
please let me know more if you have more

Ellen: Can you tell me where some of the ceme-
teries in Newberry are located. My GGGrandfat-
her was Robert Wilson. He was a Blacksmith in
Newberry and died 1838. In his estate there
are several Glymphs and Subers that are
listed. Trying to find area that he was buried
in. Records also state a Mt. Pleasant Meeting
House. Have you ever heard of this? Also
widow Wilson married into Suber family.
Please email with any info. you can share.
Thanks so much.

Ellen, I was browsing the Glymph messages and noticed the Lemuel Glymph request. Josephus Jenkins wrote a family history book, Glymph An American Family, in1994 published by Gregath Publishing Co. Eastern Division Box 1945 Cullman, AL 35056. It would answer many of your questions. I am a direct descendent of Lemuel Glymph. He was married to Sarah Kinard. One of their children, Flavius Josephus Glymph, was my great-great grandfather. His son Bachman Hentz Glymph was the father of my grandmother, Rosa Gertrude Glymph Cowan. The Bachman Hentz Glymph Family grew up in Fairplay, S. C. I now live in the Prosperity, S. C. area on Lake Murray. I've located some of the family graves but others are in cemeteries that are grown over with trees and vines.

Please contact me. I feel certain we're related as I was related to Lillian Glymph of Danville, Va. Her children are my double first cousins! Nelson's mother and my grandmother were sisters who married brothers.

Classification: Query
JOHN GLYMPH became postmaster in 1837 and Pleasant Grove community was changed to GLYMPHVILLE in 1844. It was discontinued 8-22-1866. Glympville Post Office was one of 31 in Newberry Dist. at the outbreak of the War of Northern Aggression.

In 1825 RUFF's STORE became SILAS WOOD'S store; later Wood's store became JOHN F. GLYMPH'S STORE.

In 1849 another JOHN GLYMPH STORE was one of the polling places in 15 precincts.

In 1846 a maagistrate was to serve the area of a "beat company" (area from which each company of militia was organized; theoretically a drum beaten at the center of the area could be heard by all the members of the company who could thus be assembled quickly on the sound of the alarm. Recommended appointments were made to the legislature each year; the year 1851 shows "Heller's Beat - J. F. Glymph".

The notes, above, were taken from a copy of the ledger for
the JOHN GLYMPH STORE May 8, 1834 to November 24, 1836. The ledger is hand written with well over a hundred pages.

The John Glymph Store was located west of the Broad River a short distance north of the intersection Second Creek and Heller's Creek.
