hi there,

george glue was born in rogate england in 1809.
he attempted to steal some sheets worth 3s, for this he was sent to australia!

he went to australia on the hooghley in 1834.
he got his certificate of freedom and his ticket of leave in 1842...... he never returned to england.

instead he married tina leaird and they had a son called william glue, born 1855 in victoria australia.
after this.... who knows where he moved to! i know that he left NSW, but does anyone know where he went to next? did he have any more children etc>

if any one knows, please could you share the info as it would be good to see what happened next!

many thanks

I see that you posted your query in 2006 and as a result you may nolonger be interested in George Glue but if you are then l am descended from George's brother, John Glue, born Rogate West Sussex in 1829. If you would like to know more then please contact me, the name has been "gentrified" and all of the family l am aware of now use the spelling "Glew".

Sorry for the delay in replying but l really am not that computer savvy and l really do struggle with this machine on occasions.
I am David Glew the son of Arthur John William Glew, the son of Arthur Thomas Glew, the son of Arthur Glew who was, in turn, the son of John Glue born Rogate February 1829. I think he was the son of James Glue who would have been one of the brothers of your chap, from what l can glean there were actually two co-accused (possibly father and son or uncle and nephew) and they were sentenced at Chichester Assizes in 1834 for the theft of a pair of "axle trees" and a small quantity of potatoes. I recognise the name of the ship you mention in your message so l am reasonably sure we are talking about the same man / men and if so then l think one of them did not survive long after his arrival in Australia. Unfortunately l am working from memory as all of my documents are in storeage at the present time but l am aware that there are people in the Sussex Family History Society who proved very helpful to me and could be useful to you. If it helps there are two distinct and seperate Glew families in the UK, the northern (and numerous) northern Glews based in Lincolnshire and the far smaller family of Glews, formerly the Glues, who have lived in West Sussex atleast since the mid-sixteenth centur. When l get a moment l will look at the documents and writec again hopefully confirming the information given above.

Hi, I hope you can help me with my family tree. I am a descendant of Joseph Glue who was a convict send to Australia with his brother George abord the ship Hooghley on 25/7/1834. I beleive that Joseph left behind a son - Josiah and his 1st wife, Hannah (nee Hersay). Joseph was christened on 2/2/1800 at Rogate in Sussex. His father was Thomas (B1756 - Dec 18/02/1835). Thomas was married to Ann (nee Taylor B1760). They had 7 kids - Mary, Thomas, Thomas, George, Betty, Frances & Joseph. Joseph is my GGG Grandfather. My email is michaelglew@yahoo.com.au

Hi there, I see you posted a message about George Glue in 2006, as I have just stumbled on the surname Glue from my great grandfather William James Glue son of George and Christina Laird, we thought we were from the Russell family, but I was in for a surprise when I received William's death certificate - his name was William James Glue (Alias Russell) and that name carried down to my mother, so now I am on the hunt for my Glue family, maybe we can help each other.
Maybe by now you have your answers, I am trying to find the trial records for George to no avail.
