My grandfather, Marcus Glucksman(an umlaut over the u)
came from Budapest. I know nothing more about him except that he had a tobacco
store in the Bronx and was married to the former Maria Erlich Schlessinger, who had
been married before. He died in 1938. My father, Samuel Harris Glucksman, came to Detroit
around 1918 and lived here the rest of his life. He rarely spoke of his family, altho Grandpa
did come to visit once.
I visited dad's half sister, Louise Rauscher, who still lived in New York, in 1949.
I would be interested in anything about your family. Maybe we're related?

I have been unable to find out anything I don't know about my grandfather, Marcus Glucksman(umlaut over the u)
but he did come from Hungary and, I was told by my father, Samuel Harris Glucksman that he had a cigar store. in the
Bronx. My grandmother was Maria Schlesinger, her second marriage, and they had 2 children, Helen and dad.

I know my Dad's father's family came from Budapest and also had an umlaut over the u but the name Marcus is unfamiliar to me (other than the fact that I am married to a man who's last name is Markus)
Since Dad (Jerome O. Glucksman)is 89 and has just gotten a computer I'll try to get him interested in looking at this site.
I also know that my great uncles Dick (Morris)and Ben had a cigar store in the Bronx - probably in the 1920s-40's.

Also, what I know is that my great grandparents came to this country around the Civil War. Dad had a brother Harvey. Their father was George Glucksman, a doctor on Fox street in the Bronx. I believe his father was a tailor.

Since this is my first foray into geneology I'd be curious to see what you've found out.
Please respond. Thanks

Not a damn thing!! You're the first response I've had that sounds
like it might be something. Chances may be good that we share relatives....
I'm 76, and my dad was born in 1895, so we're sort of in between each other.
I've been trying to find Glucksman relatives for a couple of years without any
luck. So far not even in the immegration records. My father never said
anything about his father's not having been the first one here. He did say that
he and grandma, who died when dad was young, came from Budapest. And that there
was a well-known rabbi in the background. Grandma's maiden name was Erlich, and
she was married to a Schlesinger before that. He had a half brother named Fred,
who I was told moved to Florida, and a half sister named Louise(Rauscher), whom I
did know. I called my cousin Hilbert Rauscher a few years ago when I was in New
York, but I wasn't thinking about geneolgy then, and, unfortunately, I didn't con-
tact him again. I have since found his and his wife Dorothy's names in the S.S. death
notices.... I would be most interested, however in learning more about your family.
Dad and mother were married here in Detroit, where I still live, and lived here until their deaths.

I forwarded your note to my Dad along with the things I found by going through the free stuff on AOL. As I think I said, yesterday was my first foray into geneaology. I also responded to a guy by the name of Henry who had a relative who was a cigar maker in NY.
That is interesting about not finding anything in the immigration records. What exactly did you look at? I know Ellis Island was not operating when my Glucksman side came over here so there would be no records there.
I'll send the information you just sent me to my Dad and maybe he can shed some light. Your other relatives don't ring a bell with me but maybe they will with my Dad.
Keep in touch.
Joy

fyi-my mother's G-mother, Sophie Radisch was
married to a Moritz (Morris) Bernat Glucksman
from Austria/Hungry (now Slovakia). Morris'
mother was Maria Evylundes from Igau/the German's called it Neudorf and it is also known as Spisska Nova Ves. Morris worked in a cigar factory possibly (according to my mom). I don't have them here, but my mother does have Morris' naturalization papers if it sounds like were related and they may give you add'l information.

I didn't get back to you because I was visiting
my granddaughter(and her parents)in Laramie, Woming,
and when I got home I just didn't try the message board
till today. All our grandfathers seem to have lived
in New York and were involved in the cigar
business....
