Anton & Raphael Glickler arrived in US aboard the ship Florida from Havre in 1853. They were from Baden but the village is unknown. Anton made shoes and Raphael (my great grandfather) was an upholster, but when Anton died Raphael took over the shoe business. Raphael married Mary (Maria)Wagner and they had 5 children: William, John, Sadie (Sarah), Oscar and Elizabeth (my grandmother). After Raphael died, William went to Canada, John & Sadie married and Mary (Maria) moved to Pittsburgh, Pa with Oscar and Elizabeth. Raphael and Anton are buried in NYC. I have no knowledge that the other Glicklers in NYC are related. My family changed the Umlaut to an i, they sometimes used u and put 2 dots on top like the umlaut.

Hello There!

I do believe we have a distant indirect connection with each other, let me briefly explain here. Your great grandfather Raphael's brother Anton Gluckler was married to Elizabeth Linder on 02 Oct 1870 in New York City. Elizabeth Linder is a daughter of my 3rd great grandparents Martin Linder and Jacobine Kennel. Anton and Elizabeth had a son also named Anton Joseph Gluckler (born 23 Oct 1871, New York City - died 07 Nov 1951, Everett, Washington).

Elizabeth had married a second time to a certain Wilhelm L. Schmitz after her first husband Anton died and I believe that the son Anton took the name of his new father, so he was then known as Anton Gluckler Schmitz. I do know that this particular branch of my family had briefly moved to Oregon and then to San Francisco. At some point in time, Anton Gluckler Schmitz and his wife Dorothy moved to Washington state. I believe they might of had a daughter named Jessie?

Are you by any chance aware of Anton Gluckler Schmitz whom would be a nephew to your great grandfather Raphael Gluckler?

I also believe the marriage record between Anton Glucker and Elizabeth Linder (a sister to my great, great grandmother Katherine Linder) indicates Anton as being born in Neidingen, Konstanz, Baden, Germany. Anton who was a shoe maker probably had some sort of connection to my 3rd Great Grandfather Martin Linder who was also a shoe maker.

Looking forward to your reply!
Colin

Colin, thank you so much for your message. I am sure Elizabeth Linder was very close with my Great-Grandmother, Mary Glickler since they would be sisters-in-law. I didn't do much research with Anton's family. I do have a copy of Anton's Will. I didn't know Elizabeth remarried and the son took the new name.

I wonder if you would mind giving me information as to where and when they were married. I couldn't find marriage records for either Anton or Raphael when I was doing my research. Perhaps Raphael and Mary married at the same place - they were very close brothers.

I had to stop my reasearch several years ago because I was caring for my mother and mother-in-law, among other time-consuming things. Someone contacted me a week ago to thank me for something I gave her years ago and then she tried to help me find some information about the Glicklers -- and today pointed me to your message. We were looking for where in Baden Raphael was born - and you had the answer. I have beautiful framed large hanging pictures of Raphael and Mary on my walls that my Grandmother passed down, so I think of G-Grandparents often. Now you have given me something I have yearned to know. -- Sally (I live in San Luis Obispo, CA.)

Hello Sally!

Thank you for your reply. I can tell you that Elizabeth Linder was born about 1852 in New York City and died about 1898 in San Francisco, though I am certain she was in contact with your great grandmother Mary. I do know that my own great grandmother Elizabeth Wannamaker had kept in touch with the Schmitz family who lived in San Francisco. (My great, great grandmother Katherine Linder would be the elder aunt of Anton Gluckler Schmitz).

My great grandmother would be of course a first cousin to Anton Gluckler Schmitz so Anton Gluckler Schmitz is a mutual cousin to us both (a Gluckler cousin to yourself and a Linder cousin to myself). The children of Elizabeth Linder's second marriage to Wilhelm L. Schmitz would be half brothers and half sisters to Anton Gluckler Schmitz.

I do believe I came across the New York City death index listing for Anton Gluckler whom I can see passed away not that long after the son Anton Gluckler Schmitz (born 23 Oct 1871, New York City) Elizabeth's second marriage to Wilhelm Schmitz took place on 04 Oct 1874 in New York City. By the 1880 Census the Schmitz family were living in Oregon, and at some point I believe in the 1880s, they came to be at San Francisco. There seems to be a remote possibility that the Schmitz family were somehow related to Eugene Schmitz who was the mayor of San Francisco during the earthquake.

The Schmitz family were piano manufacturers and Anton Gluckler Schmitz was a piano tuner by profession.

If you contact me directly via my profile, I can then give you my direct email address. I can then send over to you various records that I have spotted in regard to Anton Gluckler Schmitz such as census records, his obituary, etc.

I'm sorry to say that I do not have any photos of Anton or his mother Elizabeth. I do have photos of his grandparents (my 3rd great grandparents) Martin Linder and Jacobine Kennel which I could share with you if you are interested.

Looking forward to speaking with you more on our Gluckler-Linder connections!
