CHICAGO – Roselle Arleen (Gluck) Oyer, 81, passed away peacefully on July 1, 2011, in Glenview, Illinois, surrounded by her five children.

Roselle was born Jan. 30, 1930, in Muskegon, Michigan, the youngest of three children.

She graduated from The Rayen School in Youngstown, Ohio and received her undergraduate degree in elementary education at Michigan State University. Roselle inspired the generations of children she taught at West Hill and Belle Sherman Elementary Schools in Ithaca, N.Y.
She was a member of Temple Beth-El, and past president of their Sisterhood in Ithaca, a lifetime member of Hadassah, a member of the New York State Retired Teachers Association, and an active member of the Michigan State Alumni Association.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Samuel and Sylvia Gluck, and brother Lawrence Gluck.

She is survived by her sister, Dorothy Landau of Pineville, N.C.; her five children, Toni Lee (Wayne) Curry of Portland, Oregon, Steven (Lorri Staal) Oyer of Port Washington, N.Y. Paula (Mark) Berezin of Chicago, Laura (David) Stone of Wilmette Ill. and Nancy Oyer of Butte, Montana; grandchildren, Rachel Curry, Richard (Mari) Curry, Sarah Curry, Sam and Ben Oyer, Michael and Emily Stone, and Caroline Berezin, Hannah and Ben Rosen; great-grandson, Liam Curry; and nine nieces and nephews and their families.

Important in Roselle’s life were the four generations of her family and the joy they always gave her, her religion that guided her to live an honorable life, education, that taught her there is no end to seeking knowledge and the value of integrity, which teaches us there always is a choice. In the words of Rabbi Eliezer, Pirkei Avot, 2:15 (Talmud), “Let other people’s dignity be as precious to you as your own.” This is how she lived her life.

Graveside services were held Sunday, July 3, 2011 at 11 a.m., at Lakeside Cemetery, 605 East Short Drive, Ithaca, NY.
