This is a copy of the Family Name History that I have on the Gleaves, my husband's family. The English surname Gleaves is of nickname origin, deriving from a physical or personal characteristic of the original bearer. In this instance, the name can be traced from the Old French word 'glaive' and the middle English term 'gleyve'. meaning 'a lance or sword'. Hence, the name was given in a distinguished spearman or to a winner in a race in which the lance set up as a winning post was given as the prize. It was thus an honour to be given such a pet-name.

Nicknames were very popular during the medieval period, they were functional, as now two people of similar first names could be easily identified. It was at this time also that the concept of surnames was enjoying considerable vogue, and there was a growing aweareness of identity amongst the English people. There was no structured system of hereditary names at this time; therefore people adopted those names by which they were locally known.

The first recorded instance of this surname occurs in the Somerset Rolls of 1283; one William Glaives is registered therein. Modern variants of this surname include Gleave, Gleaves and Glave. The origin of the name is England.

I hope this will give you some idea of the origin of the name.

I am looking for information on the meaning of Gleaves, and any other historical facts you may have about Gleaves. I need the information for a college report paper in which I have to tell about my historical background. If you have any information, I would be very grateful if you sent it to me.

I do have some information on this couple and their family. My info tracks with yours in that Michael is the son of William D. Gleaves and Ann Nelson. I have Mary Ann as the daughter of Michael Gleaves Jr. and Sally Dean. Both Michael and Mary Ann are the grandchildren of Michael Glaves/Gleaves Sr.(abt 1758-1811) and his wife Rachel.
Have you seen a copy of the Interview of J. Miller Turner (1925)? He was Michael and Mary Ann's grandson. I would be happy to forward a copy to you. The document contains some errors but is a valuable resource. I am compiling a family history that includes you line (Michael Sr.)and would be willing to share a draft with you. The document is in MSWord format. Michael was the middle son of Matthew Glaves/Gleaves Sr. Of the three brothers (William, Michael Matthew Jr.),I have the least information on the descendants of Michael. Any help you can give me in completing this line would be greatly appreciated. My email is dglaves@dcoffice.gte.com

I have a good deal of information on Matthew and his wife Esther. Her last name has not been documented although many suggest it is Mitchell. I would be happy to email you a draft of a document I am working on dealing with Matthew.
A very good short factual piece has been done on Matthew by Bob Allen and has been posted to the Gleaves page @ Genforum.com. Bob also has the Robert Turk (Thomas' father)posted on Familytreemaker.com.
I have some Turk data including a copy of a map of the Beverly Patent showing Robert Turk's 1313 acres. I also have a photo of Turk Mountain.
If you would like more on Matthew or what I have on Robert Thomas Turk, I can be reached @ dglaves@dcoffice.gte.com
