William Glanville, still ageless but in a narrowed field.

G'Day All,
I have looked at 47th Regimental Paybooks. William Glanville was born at St Andrews Devon, he enlisted on 3 Feb 1831, he was a brush maker at enlistment and was discharged at his own request on 15 Mar 1849 in Limerick Ireland. He served in Edinburgh, Ireland, Gibraltar, Malta, Barbados, St Kitts and England. He married the widow Sophia Duck (previously Killum, nee Gomez) in Daventry England in 1844 and they came to Western Australia in 1851. No where has he left a record of his age but presuming he was at least 15 when he enlisted he was born before 1816. Does this new information about his place of birth help? I have tried to find him via this board before without success but there may be new people reading the messages now.
Cheers, John in Western Oz

Glanvilles, Burdens and Brewers in Hampshire, England

I am trying to work out if there is any connection between the Glanville, Burden and Brewer families.

What I think I have so far is:

1841 census
John and Mary Burden + children living in Dorset - some children have been born in Sussex/Hants, so they have obviously lived elsewhere

Ann Glanvill - an independant widow with children including Theresa, Adolphus and Angelina, living in Portsmouth. I believe her late husband was John Karritt Glanville (d1838). she also has a son named James CORNELIUS Glanville - Cornelius is an often-repeated Burden name.

1851 census
John and Mary Burden have moved to Portsmouth in a street next to Ann's 1841 address and have acquired three extra children - not new births since 1841 but older children. Their names are Theresa, Adolphus and Angelina and there ages tie up with Ann's children of 1841. They are listed as sons/daughters and have the surname Burden. Theresa is married to Robert Anderson so I tried looking for the marriage - Robert Anderson married Thirza Maria Glanville.

I think Ann remarried in 1850, but it is one of those listings where there is just one name on the page, so I haven't got her husband's surname.

I am working on finding these children in later census returns and it appears that they have reverted to the surname Glanville. Adolphus Burden was a painter in 1851 - so was Adolphus Glanville in 1881. Angelina married George Mussell and moved to Brighton.

All these coincidences make me think that there must be some sort of relationship between the two families - maybe Ann G was John Burden's sister?

Anyone any ideas?

Catherine

I wondered if anyone Stateside knew anything about an Ernest Albert Glanvill (possibly spelt Glanville) who quit Clerkenwell, London, England, for RI, most likely Providence, around 1900. We believe he married in 1917 and died in 1969 aged 90 in Cranston, RI. He was my great great uncle but lost touch with my grandparents in the 1930s.

I would love to find out if we have cousins in New England.

Looking for a census dodging Glanville

William Glanville in the British Army at Gibraltar in 1841 dodged the census, met Sophia Kellam (nee Gomez) a widow, there and married her in Daventry, County of Northampton England on 6 Nov 1844. Their daughter Margaret was born 26th Jan 1847 in the Parish of Charleville, County of Cork. Daughter Amelia Valentine was born 14 Feb 1849 location??. The family in 1851 together with Sophia's daughters, Maria Antonia and Ann Kellam sailed for Western Australia on the convict ship Pyrenees where he was an enrolled pensioner guard thus dodging the 1851 census too. Shortly after their arrival Sophia died in childbirth and William could not manage. He lost his prison warder job (alcohol) and word of mouth has him leaving the family and returning to the UK via South Africa to rejoin Army and serve in the Crimea and from there to the West Indies (Jamaica?) dodging the 1861 census (that is three in a row dodged). It is believed he was from near Saltash in UK and his father was John Glanville, a seaman. Does anyone else connect to to this dodger, my wife's g.g.grandfather?
