Surnames: GLADHILL, GLADDEN, GLADDELL, GLADEN, GLADIN
I, too, would like to know the parents, siblings, or any relatives of this William Gladhill. Whether he truly was born in Maryland is a bit in doubt. Some histories say he was born in Virginia. I live in Mayland, as did my Gladhill ancestors back to around 1800. But apparently there was a lot of back-and-forth across the Potomac into Virginia.

In Loudoun County, VA, in 1799, a William Gladhill who turned 10 years old on June 23, 1799 was apprenticed to a John Davis to be a farmer. He was identified as the son of Mary Gladhill, but no father was mentioned. Perhaps his father had died.

To complicate matters, the name in Virginia (and sometimes in Maryland) back in the early years was sometimes spelled as Gladden or Gladen.

Muster rolls of the Maryland Militia during the War of 1812 show William Gladhill (no age or other identifying information is given) joined Cpt Flautt’s company April 29, 1813. Shortly afterward, on June 15, 1813, he transferred to the regular Army for a one year enlistment and was discharged June 15, 1814. Later, William Gladhill was in Cpt Shawen’s company of the Maryland Militia during Sep & Oct of 1814.

Along with William Gladhill who joined Cpt Flautt’s Militia company in 1813, there was Thomas Gladhill. Both enlisted in the Maryland Milita and transferred to the Army on the same day, suggesting that they were brothers or at least close relatives. Thomas was described as a farmer, age 19 (meaning he was born in 1793 or 1794), born in MD.

Thomas Gladhill remained in the Army for 2 years, until March 15, 1815. Apparently this qualified him for a Federal land grant, which he claimed in Missouri in 1819. Loudoun CoVA court records document Thomas Gladhill (or Gladdell), born 3/11/1793, being apprenticed in 1807.

Let's hope somebody can find some answers!

Sorry about that, I need to correct my previous post:

Mrs. Ann(e) Chapman was Ann(e) Day the sister-in-law
of Mary Thompson Day/Johnson/Gladhill and sister
of the 1st husband of Mary, James Day.

The husband of Ann was Charles Chapman deceased at
the time of Reuben's will. Charles was for many years
a county clerk for Isle of Wight, and is listed often
as a witness in legal transactions during his time in
office.

Joseph Chapman was their son, not Ann's hushband.
