My gggrandparents were Peter Glacken and Jane McGinnis, born in Ireland but married in Greenock, Scotland, about 1850. Their children were Susan b 1851, Hugh b 1856, Peter b 1859, John b1861, Elizabeth b 1864, Jane b 1867, Daniel b 1870 and Francis b 1871. Does anyone recognise any of these names?

I am researching my husband's family. His name ids Peter Simon MacArthur Glacken. He was born in Weir Street and his father was James Glacken, born James Carrol. His mother is Jane Gilmour Henry. They were married in 1931. I would be grateful for any information.

Hi Maben,
It seems we cross paths again! You know all this information already, but I'll post it here in case someone else finds a link! My Glackens don't travel from Donegal to Greenock until 1901:
William Glackin marr. (yr ?) Ellen Ann Docherty (Moville, Co. Donegal, IRE) b. 1873 John Glacken marr (yr ?) Mary Anne McEvoy (Moville, Co. Donegal, IRE) b. 1900 (moville) William John Glacken marr 1931 Hannah BOYLE (Greenock, Renfrew, Scotland)

i found your family tree on Glacken and wondered if there was any information you could give me on mine. My ancestor is Hugh Glacken born about 1801 in Derry Ireland. He lived in Glasgow and maried Catherine Mcanally. They had a son Peter Glacken who married Williamina Mchendrie. Would they have any link to your ancestors?
|
Hi Nell, I do have the names Hugh and Peter in my Glacken ancestry but their wives are different from the ones you name. That doesn't mean there is no connection, just that I can't find evidence of it at the moment. If any of your ancestors settled in Greenock then there's a strong possibility our families are related.

thanks for getting back to me. Hugh and Catherine were living in sidney street lanarkahire in the 1841 census along with other children Hugh born 1832, Margaret born 1839 and William born 1837. I noticed there weren't many Glackens in Glasgow round about this time and it is an unusual name in Scotland so thought there could be a connection. I hope so, because I have been trying for a while to find out more information on Hugh. I have come to a stand still for now and don't know where to go next.
|
Do you have access to the later censuses? I notice the family is on the 1851 census still living at 11 Sidney Street. Hugh is a cotton hand loom weaver. Other members of household are as follows: Agnes Glacken 8 Catharine Glacken 40 Hugh Glacken 47 John Glacken 4 Margaret Glacken 12 Peter Glacken 1 6 Mo William Glacken 14 Laughlin Reid 25 Margaret Reid 26 Margaret Reid 1

Yes, thanks. I did find this. Peter is my ggrandfather.
I was hoping to find out more about Hugh's parents. This is where I am stuck. It says he was born in Derry but I went into Google earth and there appears to be more than one Derry. Although I do understand that the surname Glacken is from northern Ireland so the Derry referrence could be Londonderry How easy have you found it researching your Irish ancetry?
|
Very difficult, owing to lack of documents in Ireland. If you can find Hugh's death certificate on Scotland's People, it MAY tell you the names of his parents, but that would depend on the informant knowing the info to pass on to the registrar.
|
Hi again,
I have found his birth certificate on Scotlandspeople. I am afraid it didn't give me much information. Only his place and reason of death. Also as Hugh and Catherine were married in 1831, the records are on the old parochial register so, again there was not very much information.
Oh well, I will just keep trying.
If you find out any information that your ancestors were related to mine please get back to me. Good luck with your research and thank you for your help.
Helen
