I am looking for any information or relatives of Henry Nilsen Gjesdahl who supposedly drowned at sea. To my knowledge his body was never found. He was a Norwegian merchant marine. Thank you!

My father was Arnold Christoffer Yesthal (bornSept. 12,1916 in Brooklyn N.Y.)Our name was "Americanized" when his father;Christoffer OliverYesthal (bornOct.21,1887 in Bergen Norway) came to America. I was always told that our name was originally spelled (Gjesdahl or Gjesdal)

Interesting...My GG Grandfather, Andrew Ellingson Gjaesdal (Gesdahl, Gjesdahl...it all starts sounding the same, no?) was a Sea Captain from the Stavanger and Gjaesdal area. He emigrated his family to America in 1879 but we have been told he went back to sea and maintained his seafaring ways. His wife died in 1881 in Illinois, probably giving birth to my G-Grandfather, Alfred George Gesdahl.
Maybe your ancestor and mine went down to their watery graves together? It's a stretch for the imagination, but one never knows.
Would like to know if you've found any more information? I'm looking for Norwegian ship's records that would list him as a captain.

Additional information such as approximate birth years and the names of the other family members may help -

Info from the emigrant protocol out of the port of Stavanger.

There is a 20 year old seaman listed in the Rogaland area in the 1865 census, a possibility -

Especially interesting because there are a few farms in the parish his father lists as birthplace called "Gjesdal" and "Gjæsdahl"... perhaps a historical family connection.

Thank you very much! Now, if I may ask more questions--

Is this the address?
Municipality: Høyland
Municipality number: 1123
Name of domicile: Nedre Tronæs

What is Nedre Tronaes?

What is Bødker as an occupation?

And under birth place, where (or what) are Ly Prgj. and Hetlands Prgj?

Thank you so very much--I'm sure you know how much this means to me!

Nedre Tronæs would be the name of a farm. It was located in the district known as Høyland in Rogaland Norway.
The 'prgj' is an abbreviation for prestegjeld - clerical district. Browsing the related place names for Rogaland Norway in the LDS catalog gives indication of Høyland, Lye, and Hetland jurisdictions.
I don't know what Bødker as an occupation is. I recommend that you check a Norwegian-English dictionary.
