Gjerde family in Minnesota

I'm looking to find information on my line of the Gjerde family which I've tracked down to the Crookston area of Minnesota. My Father (Dale Gjerde) was born in Crookston, to Orvald Gjerde and Lila Mae (Larson) Gjerde. Orvald's father was Ole Gjerde, who moved to the area around 1906 (I found his Homestead application here on ancestry.com.) The family farm is located in what is now Warren, MN.

Unfortunately, very little is known about our family history, since Orvald (my grandfather) was an abusive drunk and my father and other family did not talk to him much at all (he passed away in 1993.) My father has told me that he believes Ole Gjerde came up the Red River from somewhere around Iowa to settle in Minnesota.

Ole Gjerde had several children, although the only two that I know of are Orvald and his brother Ed (who is alive and well, living in California, albeit extremely hard to get a hold of.)

If anyone here is a Gjerde in minnesota or knows of any of these connections, I would love to hear from you! please contact me at egjerde@mn.rr.com if you have any information at all. thanks!

I read your post when I was trying to locate Ed Gjerde who was born in Minnesota. He had a farm in Minnesota but lived in California. His business, Sur-Lite Corporation, was on Allport Avenue in Sante Fe Springs California and he lived in Whittier California. His wife, Mary passed away many years ago and they have a daughter Andrea who is a bug scientist. They also have a son who is a doctor. We have lost track of Ed and I think that he is the same one you refer to in your posting. In 1980 my husband, Wilf, became the Canadian agent/manufacturer for Ed's products. Ed sold his business to Wanda a few years ago but we still maintained contact with Ed. I noticed that your post was in 2001 which said Ed was doing well but hard to get ahold of. We were in Los Angeles in November 2002 but could not locate him and the business was no longer to be found. We would love dearly to find "Uncle Ed" and re-establish contact with him or his daughter. I hope you can help me with this.

Hello. I am also researching my Gjerde family from Roseau County, MInnesota. They left there in 1910 and immigrated to Saskatchewan, Canada. My grandfathers name was Ole Helge Gjerde and Grandma was Betsy Holland. Her mother was Brita Holland. I know they lived in North Dakoda and Iowa previous to that as I found their 1910 Census info.

Have you had any luck in locating your family??

Brenda Gjerde

We recently purchased a collection of antique books and papers that includes original diaries and correspondence from Ole Gjerde of Warren, Minnesota. The material dates from 1904-1910 or so.

Please contact if you may be interested in any further information.
