Surnames: Givan, Gavine, Giveen, Given
I am a descendant of Robert Givan 1760-1828, who died on his way to Indiana from Maryland. His descendants settled in Dearborn county, Indiana. I have received a book with the Givan history in it, but it does not line up with what I can find on line. Supposedly, Robert was a son of Frank (Francis?) and grandson of William, and great-grandson of James (died 1723). In addition, the wife of James that I have listed in the book, does not coincide with what I have found about James. I have seen postings that suggest the history/genealogy that I have is incorrect. Has anyone traced the line from James to my Robert?

Hi

I have tracked my Robert Givan born 10/26/1782-83 Worcester Co. Md. to Shelby Co. Mo. and d. 5/8/1851.

My piecing together of his ancestors would be as follows

John Givan b ca 1762 d. prior 10/1800 md to Mary McClung 10/25/1782 Baltimore Md.

Robert Givan b ca 1740 and md to Prescela/Priscilla
John Givan b. ca 1700 and 2nd wife Ann
James Givan b. ca 1648 and md Mary Rownd

This family can get pretty confusing in Worcester Co.
Can you tell me more about the genealogy, Name and author?

Thank you
Vic

Vic: Thank you for the information. The genealogy book is written by TS Givan. I believe it is called "The Givan Family", but i only have a copy. He does not document any sources and the early information is suspect. He gives Richard Givan as the patriarch and I am pretty sure there is no corroboration for that.
I am descended as well from Robert and his wife Catherine Duncan. Is your Priscilla's last name Cottingham? I have information for his Indiana descendants as well as the Indiana descendants from his cousin Joshua (I believe).

Thank you. There may be a connection, but not the one I hoped. I appreciate the information. Unfortunately, all the family search and ancestry.com information comes from the same, probably inaccurate, source.
