To the best of my knowledge, my grandfather Joseph comes from Messina Scily. The name Giuffre is a pure scilian name....very common there but not in Italy. My grandfather opened a fish market aka Giuffre Sons Fish Market located in the historical section of the North End in Boston. My father and brother still carrying on the name and business. There are other Giuffre's in Scily that are related to us. But still trying to find relatives here

My father Bruno was born in Messina and came toBoston at the age of 4. He was raised in the West End of Boston. His father's name was
John and he had brothers named Peter, Salvatore and Anthony. Going through the tunnel many times growing up I always saw the fish market sign but thought we were not related. When I visitied Messina and did some searching I realized how great the Messina connection was. I would enjoy talking to you.

My great grandfather was Matteo Guiffre from Termini who came to America through Ellis Island 17 Feb 1898 at the age of 31. My grandmother said she only heard mentioned that he had a brother Salvatore and Luigi. Any chance these names are familiar? He settled in Boston and owned a meat market/grocery store in the early 1900s.

Rachel,

The funniest thing is that my boyfriend and I were just in the North End two days ago. We were walking around, and saw the Giuffre fish market. I had never seen it before!

My grandfather was born in Catania, Sicily, and was a Giuffrida. (which I've read is directly related to the Giuffre name, but not as common) His cousin, Frank Giuffrida, used to own the Hilltop Steak House chain. I am looking for his relatives. His name is Cirino Giuffrida.

I am having a difficult time finding information on Giuffrida and Giuffre, but I suspect my search will get easier - I just have to know where to look.

Take care.

Christina

My grandfather and grandmother came over from Sicily -
John and Josephine Guiffre. At Ellis Island their name was Anglicized to Jeffrey. They settled in Wakefield, Mass. They had a son Dominic who owned Jeffrey's Liquor Store in Wakefield. My father John was listed on his birth certificate as John Guiffre. It might be hard to track down some relatives due to spelling errors and name changes. Good Luck. - Lynn

Hi,

My paternal half (nee Guiffre) was once from Termini Imerese (Sicilia). Their name was changed to Jeffrey too probably at Ellis Island as well, not sure. Only they came to Toronto. I haven't had contact w/that side of the family in 17 years, so it is extrmelly hard to get info.

Joseph is my grandfather (his wife a Marterino) and their children: Anthony (my father), Vince, Salvatore, Rose, Joseph and a few others I forget. It always cracks me up when I think about how the Government tries (tried) to Anglosize, but the Christian names are Italian; Ie., Salvatore Jeffrey, really convincing...

I think we are cousins. Antonio Giuffre 1875 is my grandfather's first cousin. He departed Naples Mar 14 1899
Arrived 1899 March 27, 1899 on the Kaiser Wilhelm II along with his brother Giuseppe 1885 and my grandfather Leonardo 1877..All 3 were going to the uncle, Publio Giuffre at 5168 Butler Street Pittsburgh.
The ship manifest notations are listed at the end of this memo. I have letters from Ignatia Mary Jeffrey to my mother, her cousin.I have visited our cousins in Aspenwall and Dorseyville PA. Contact me at gotto@ameritech.net
.
Antonio was 23, b 1875. #8

Leonardo,my grandfather, # 20 was 22 b 1877. All their ages correspond with with their birth years.
