This post is over 10 years after the above. But someone may find the following of interest: Jackson Lee Gitchell was the only son of Wallace Frank Gitchell (1873-1939) and Edith Jackson (1886-1913), dau. of John William Jackson and Sarah Ellen Smith, son of William Fenwick Jackson and Ann Donald Aiken. That should give the needed Jackson connections. Ms. Graziano's 9 Oct 2011 post on the Lee bulletin board gives some particulars. The basics are given in a bio of Wallace Frank Gitchell from vol. 3 of C. H. Carney's History of Oregon Illustrated (1922), online at
http://www.onlinebiographies.info/or/gitchell-wf.htm. A tree with more info is on Wikitree at
http://www.wikitree.com/genealogy/Gitchell-Family-Tree-3, and seems substantially correct as far as it goes. With a little sleuthing, the line of Sarah Ellen Smith (Jackson) can probably be driven back many generations, since her paternal gmother was Sarah Lightfoot Lee, probably from those noted VA families. The line of her mother Mary Northrop/Northrup might be a little harder to ferret out, but the Northrops were prominent in Dutchess Co. NY and New England (Fairfield Co. CT etc.) and are well-documented there. Some of them moved to VA - an example is Northrup Fuller (son of Sarah Northrop) who moved his family from Dutchess Co. NY to Montgomery Co. VA ca. 1784. Her father's Smith family might also have either VA connections (as suggested by others) or New England connections (as suggested by the Northrup name), and there are also Gitchell-Smith connections involving the Haviland family (the maiden name of Laura Haviland of underground railway fame was Smith, connected to my Gitchell line). I have also read that Gen. Robert A. Lee, supposed to be related to the above Jacksons, had a Northrup on his staff; a connection there is also a possibility, but in my mind less likely. Some careful study is in order.
Wallace Frank Gitchell b. 1873 in Grand Rapids, Kent Co. MI is the son of Harry M. Gitchell and Lucy Adelia Shear, son of William Gitchell and Susan Jemima Lewis. He is the first cousin of my ggfather Wallace Calvin Gitchell born the same year in Iowa. The original reason for the frequent use of the name Wallace amongst the Gitchells is not known. Harry M. Gitchell and family appear in the 1880, 1900, and 1920 censuses of Kent Co. MI. Harry was a policeman and cabinet maker. Wallace Frank is not enum. with the family in 1880 (although his younger sister Jennie is), for which there is no current explanation. Wallace Frank Gitchell was a bright young accountant and in early 1901 moved from Grand Rapids MI to Vancouver, B.C. to take the job of comptroller of the B.C. Electrical Railway, as reported in several trade publications of Feb and Mar 1901. The bio noted above describes his subsequent movements. For this reason, it is unlikely that he knew (or was related to) his wife's Jackson family before arriving in Vancouver; however, I've been surprised before.
I have much on this Gitchell line, and over the years have corresponded with some of the people mentioned earlier in this thread. By a fluke, I was able to all this info on Wallace Frank Gitchell together just one hour ago, after not working his father's line for a decade or so. Enjoy!
