Hi Bob, I wonder if you had any joy with this.
I think Robert Gisby is my wifes Ancester too.
We have Robert Gisby Christened 13th January 1798, Born Minster, Married Sarah, born Hoxton 1806.
Children John 1830, Stephen 1826, Thomas 1849, Jane Ann 1832, Mary 1827

Roberts Parents were
Robert Gisby born 1762, Minster. Married to Anne Cornwall.
The problem is that there were two Roberts born in Minster in 1762 and we don't know which is the right one. Have you made progress on this?

Apologies for a somewhat lengthy delay in responding. Sorry to report that I have made no progress regarding further details on Robert (the father).
I believe that there were 10 children for Robert and Sarah, my interest is in the line from John b 1829 (that date is from family record only - not confirmed by any official record but is supported by a baptism record for Jan 1830).
I have quite a few details from many of the descendants of the elder Robert, which line are you interested in?

Hi,
My wife Teresa is also descended from John Gisby.
Her path is:
John Gisby>James George Gisby>James Gisby>Katerine Gisby>Teresa Palmer

Our Holy Grail is to find a photo of John, as he didn't die until 1920 there must have been one.

We are also interested in George James Gisby (the twin brother of James George), who had one child who was killed in WW1.

Regards,Tim

Tim,

The easy bit first. Stanley George Gisby was the son of George James and Ada Swallow. He was killed at the Battle of Loos on 9 Apr 1918. He is commemorated on panels 89 - 91 of the Loos Memorial, Dud Corner Cemetery, Pas-de-Calais, France (no known grave). His name is also on the Woodnesborough (Nr Sandwich - home of his parents) War Memorial and the Parish Role of Honour. He was serving with the 1st/4th Battalion The Loyal North Lancashire Regiment. I have more on his military service.

I have a bit to more unravel on James George, including some newspaper articles. I have a query on his wife, who I think was Mary Ann Poysden, I can find no background on her so she may have been married before.

Would the James you mention in your line be James George b. abt 1897 in Alkham? If so, I have been unable to confirm a marriage so far.

On the subject of photos there are a few Gisby ones about but many do not have any names or dates. On my side of the family there is no one left to ask.

I do have quite a lot of details on BMDs and Census which I may be able to help you with.

Regards

Bob

Bob, Thanks for that.
Yes, we have seen the Woodnesborough memorial (Its a shame they spelt Gisby wrong!). I presume there is no known photo of Stanley. I believe his parents moved and died at Folkestone.

Did you know John Gisby had another Grandchild killed in WW1? Ernest Partridge, the son of Jane Lucy Gisby. We do have photos of Jane Lucy and Ernest if you don't already have them. Ernests name is on the Menin Gate at Ypres, and we have seen that ourselves.

We do also have what we believe is a photo of James George.
James George did indeed marry Mary Ann Poysden (the daughter of John Poysden (b. Sturry, 1835) and Elizabeth Makey (b. Staple, 1832).

Son James (born at The Minnis, Alkham, 22/08/1897 married Ellen Elizabeth Read (b. 18/06/1903). They married at Eastry on 11/04/1921.

James and Ellen were my wife Teresas Grandparents.

We try to visit Kent at least once a year to catch up on any relatives we still know of. Some of which we have only found through Family History research. We are not in contact with anybody who still has a Gisby surname!

I have attached photos of James George and Mary Poysden, and of son James.

Regards, Tim

ps. how are you related to John?

Tim,
Thank you very much for the info and photo. I think we may have quite a bit of info to share. Would you like to contact me direct via bobtemp99@aol.com (this avoids me publishing my email address on an open forum).
You say that you visit Kent once a year. I live in Bath where are you?
Regards
Bob
