First Question: Haiti or Cuba? Most refugees from the slave revolts in Haiti (Saint Domingue), begining in 1791, became refugees in Cuba (mainly in a town called Baracoa). In 1808 Napoleon invaded Spain - consequently in 1809 the Spanish in Cuba exiled all the French (Haitian or Saint Domingues) in 1809. Most came to New Orleans. This pattern is true for such families as Giquel, Morel de Guiramand, Daubert, Riguard, etc.
DeArmas or Dumas? The Dumas family from Haiti are very famous. Alexandre Dumas, a decsendant wrote, The Three Musketeers. Ernest Francois Dumas, in New Orleans, was very rich and a prominant figure in the Civil War and politics. The DeArmas family in New Orleans is, I believe, mostly Spanish. Christoval DeArmas,a notary, was very prominant in the early 19th century. The DeArmas family is connected by marriage to the Massicot and Morel de Guiramand families as well as others).
I am decsended from Massicot, Morel de Guiramand, Giquel, Daubert, Riguard and others. I have a substantial amount of information and research on both the Haitian-Cuban mirgation to New Orleans and family history with numerous cross references to DeArmas.
Please feel free to contact me directly at gmgnola@hotmail.com. This will be easier due to the amount of the data.
Either way, both DeArmas and Dumas are great old Louisiana names with fascinating histories.

My grandfather was Charles Ralph Morel, born in New Orleans 4/2/87. His father was also Charles Ralph Morel (birthdate unknown) married to Laura Pinto (birth and marriage dates unknown) who was born in Cuba. I don't have Charles Ralph Morel Sr.'s parents' names, but two of his brothers were Louis and Sam.

Could your Morel de Guiramand's be related to our New Orleans Morels?

Your question was, "Could your Morel de Guiramand's be related to our New Orleans Morels?" That's a very good question and one that I've tried to answer, unsucessfully, myself.

There are tantilizing coincidences! Pierre Morel was an attorney who came to Louisiana in the early 19th century and soon had to move to Baton Rouge (then still part of Spain) due to not getting along with Andrew Jackson just after the Battle of New Orleans (1815). My ancester was Jean Pierre Morel de Guiramand, an attorney, who also was newly arrived in Louisiana in the early 19th century and shows evidence of being in the Baton Rouge area shortly thereafter.

Jean Pierre Morel de Guiramand also came from Cuba, the area of Santiago de Cuba. Prior to that he had been a refugee in Jamaica, a Seneschal (official) in Saint Domingue (Haiti), and a member of the French Parlement in Paris. His brother, Jean Marie Morel de Guiramand, was a Judge in St. Charles Parish. This Morel de Guiramasnd succeeded a Jacques Bernard Massicot as judge in the parish, and later the Massicot and Morel de Guiramand families were joined by marriage (via Victor Louis Bourges), but as yet I can not connect this Massicot judge's family to the Masssicot family the Morel de Guiramand's married into.Meanwhile, Pierre Morel (of New Orleans), was a charter member of the Louisiana bar association.

Sometimes the Morel de Guirmand's went simply by either Morel, or simply Guiramand, and under almost every possible misspelling in between. It does get confusing!

By the end of the 19th century there is evidence that both the Morel family, and the Morel de Guiramand (now surnamed Massicot via marriage) family, were both living along Bayou St. John in New Orleans near Esplanade Avenue and the "old foot bridge."

My email is gmgnola@hotmail.com. If you will contact me directly with your email address I'll send my entire file on Morel de Guiramand which has many cross references to the Morel family as well. Maybe you will be able to spot some detail that might answer our question!

Thanks,

Jerry Gandolfo
