I have a picture I bought today, maybe it's your family? It's a caucasian man probably in 30's/40's. Looks to be late 1800's. Back reads "John Gipe, brother of Rebecca Gipe Shartzer (Elmira's mother)."

Did a quick search for you. It appears that the name should be spelled SHATZER. The Pennsylvania Church and Town Records, 1708 - 1985 show a Jan. 23, 1866 marriage of Rebecca Gipe to Washington Shatzer in Shippensburg, Cumberland, Pennsylvania.

In the 1880 Census, there is a Washington "Shatyer" with a wife Rebecca and a bunch of kids, including a 7 year old named Elmira that is likely to be the same person. You may locate the family in West Pennsborough, Cumberland, Pennsylvania. I can see how they read the "y" as a "z" in that record, but there is one more child on the next page that appears to me to look more like a Z than a Y.

Using Rebecca's birth about 1850 locates an 1860 census record for a Rebecca Gipe in the same area: West Pennsboro, Cumberland, Pennsylvania. The adults in the home are Joshua Gipe (his name also appears on the marriage record) and Marcy. There is a John Gipe in the home, born about 1848.

You will find both families together in the 1870 census in the same location, though Joshua is indexed as Jashie and Shatzer is spelled Sharter.

I hope you're able to find someone to share this precious photo with.
