I have some Gipes in my family and am having a difficult time tracing. My great-grandmother is Margaret Gipe (1899-1972) and married Charles Edward Gitchel (Aug 1889-1954). I'd like to trace both lines but am particularly interested in who the parents of Margaret Gipe are. Seems like I'm at a dead-end. My grandmother's name is Virginia Gibson (Gitchel) and my grandfather is Leo Gibson.

If you know where Margaret was born, it's quite possible that the family would be in the same location in the 1900 census. If you can access this family tree, it would appear to be the same person you are seeking: http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/26867360/person/1937189752

I don't have access. I'm not sure where she was born but could you possibly tell me if her mother's name was Jane Haulk (Hauk/ Hawk)? I was able to find my Margaret's mother's name and I know that Jane's body was exhumed and taken to a reservation someplace in Oklahoma. I'm interested to know more about this. Does this sound like your family?

I'm not a descendant of this branch of the family, though I am a Gipe descendant. Many, but not all, Gipes are related if they can trace their genealogy back to the 1700s in the US.

To answer your question, it's too bad you cannot see the page to which I provided the link. There is a photograph of this individual. Her mother's name is indeed listed as Jane Catherine Houk, b. 1863 and died 25 Aug. 1945 in Woodruff, Phillips, KS. There is no mention of an exhumation and reburial.

Did you happen to look at her headstone or cemetery information? My grandmother didn't speak a lot about being native American except saying that her grandmother was buried 'with her people'.... (it's also obvious by looking at her and her siblings). I found out from an aunt who is doing genealogy research that the body was exhumed to be returned to the reservation but don't know exactly how to find that information.

No. I didn't look at that information and didn't see anything like that posted on the family tree that I did see. It's possible that the owner of that tree or other researchers may have that information. I would recommend that you utilize search engines and see if you can find other trees you are able to access without a membership. Also, familysearch.org has added some databases in recent years, some with digitized images. You also may find some success by trying some of the Rootsweb mailing lists. I realize this is much more difficult without a membership, but there are definitely some resources that may help you answer your question. Best of luck!
