Hello

I am directly descended from James Taprell Gimblett.
My Great Great grandfather: JT Gimblett (only child??, not aware of any siblings);
Great Grandfather: John Diamond Gimblett (only one of his generation to have a child);
Grandmother: Grace Spencer Gimblett (only one of her generation to have a child), who married Charles Alleyne Goodwin;
Father: Allan Hartley Goodwin (only child);
me!

I would appreciate any information you may have - I have been unable to determine how JT and his family came out to Australia.

Happy to share what I have on this branch of my family.

Regards

Shirley

I find it exceedingly tricky to get much information about the Gimblett's, and from what I can work out there are no other relatives in Australia that descend from JT (quite a few suicides, including his own in Beechworth)

Hello Shirley, I came across your post as a result of researching the Taprell family name. I am hoping to create a Taprell message board, which is almost by the way. Since your Gt gt grandfather's name includes Taprell I am curious as to the connection with the Taprells whose history goes back to the 1500s in St Neot which is less than 20 miles from Calstock. I believe JT Gimblett's parents were Henry and Rebecca (nee Diamond) and Henry died abt 1805, strongly supporting your view that JT had no siblings.

Terry

Hi Terry

I'm very excited to get a response to my post. I've found it difficult to track this line of the family. My connection is as follows:
Father: Allan Hartley Goodwin
Gmother: Grace Spencer Gimblett
GGFather: John Diamond Gimblett
GGGFather: James Tapprell Gimblett
And as you've said below JT's parents were Rebecca Diamond and Henry Gimblett.

However I cannot find the actual connection to the Taprells family name, which I presume came from Henry Gimblett, because I have been able track back on Rebecca Diamond's line and can find Treise, Witheridge, Deacon and Cutty, but no Taprell. The Gimblett's are a mystery, and as best as I can work out there are no descendants apart from my father, from JT (that is another long rather sad story!), so I am struggling to find leads.

Any suggestions very welcome! (I do wonder whether Henry Gimblett's mother was a Taprell, but that is purely an unsubstantiated guess)

Regards

Shirley

Hi again Shirley

I've tried locating parents for Henry Gimblett without any success. Then thinking perhaps that your GGGFather may acquired the middle name of Taperell from the Diamond side I did a little digging on the Cornwall OPC website.

On 19 Oct 1761 a Nicolas Taprel married an Elizabeth Diamond, and later on 3 May 1772 a James Taperl married a Grace Diamond. Both marriages took place in St Dominick which is about 3 miles from Calstock. So far I have no other information.

Terry

Hmmm - interesting.

Thanks Terry. I feel like we are sooo close and just missing a couple of small pieces of the puzzle. Your approach has given me some new thoughts about what may have happened. I'll do some digging too, although it will need to wait til I return from holidays.

Kind regards

Shirley
