I've been trying to find a link between the Devon and Wales Gimbletts for a while now. There seem to be several geographical links, usually in the Devon - Wales direction.

Us Gimbletts here are mostly to be found in South East Wales, particularly Newport.

There are other pockets - New York, Toronto, and New Zealand. Not sure where the link is between these.

Any information gratefully received!

Hello - have just found your message. I have a Caroline Palmer who married a Gimlett around 1882. They later went on to live in America and became very wealthy. Is this any good to you. I don't have much more on them as this was written down by my Mother who now has Alzheimers and she just gave them a mention - Best wishes Shirli

Yes, thanks for this, Shirli. We GIMBLETTs have relatives (many!) in the US now (Oklahoma) but I wasn't aware of any GIMLET(T)s (without the 'b'). Apparently there are around 13 different spellings of the family name Gimblett, so not surprising really!

Thanks again,

John, Wales, UK. www.johngimblett.com

I know that a large pocket of NZ GIMBLETTs are descended from Matthew GIMBLETT who married my husband's relative, Grace SPETTIGUE in 1698 in Warbstow Cornwall.

Matthew & Grace =
John GIMBLETT & Rebecca WOOD =
Robert GIMBLETT & Mary SANDERCOCK =
John GIMBLETT & Ann GILLARD =
John GIMBLETT & Mary Ann LITTLE =
7 of 8 of their children emigrated to New Zealand -- Robert, Mary Ann, William, Margery, James, Matthew Little, Jane Margaret. Son John stayed in Cornwall at least until 1901 Census in Liskeard, Cornwall.

At least 1 group of GIMBLETTs in Durham county, Ontario, Canada were descended Matthew G & Grace SPETTIGUE as well.

Thomas GIMBLETT born abt 1820 [h/o Grace PETHICK]

s/o Ann GILLBARD & Robert GIMBLETT of North Petherwin
s/o Elizabeth WILCOCK & James GIMBLETT
s/o Elizabeth DOWNING & James GIMBLETT
s/o Rebecca WOOD & John GIMBLETT
s/o Matthew GIMBLETT & Grace SPETTIGUE

Thomas' son James emigrated to the US and they married and had children in North Dakota and Minnesota while a couple of his daughters also moved to ND and had many children but of course, they are difficult to find because of the non-GIMBLETT surname :-)

I am trying to trace as many of Matthew GIMBLETT & Grace SPETTIGUE's descendants as I can so any help or direction is appreciated.

Dallas

would your Catherine Gimblet be the former Catherine Francis of Mumbles, Wales?

I am descended from John Cobbledick of Plymouth, Devon - her 1st husband - i believe he was lost at sea c. 1851.

Apologies, i know your post is a few years old, i've just seen it now - many thanks, Rachel A.
