Gilpin as a middle name

Surnames: COOPER, BACON, McMICKLE, STEVENS/STEPHENS, COOKE
Hello Everyone,

I had a great, great uncle named Hardy GILPIN COOPER. I have often wondered where his middle name came from. He was descended from COOPER, STEVENS/STEPHENS, BROWN/BROWNE, BACON, possibly COOK/COOKE and here seems to be some relationship with the family of James M. THOMPSON, who was enumerated as a neighbor to the COOPERs in Stewart and Webster COunties of GA 1850/1860, in fact one of the COOPER children was counted in the THOMPSON home in one of these censuses. These families ended up in GA, but migrated from and/or to VA, NC, SC, TN. Does anyone know of a connection between these families and the Gilpin family? This line of COOPER descends from Fleet COOPER, Sr.
